Luce e design

——Jean-Jacques Lanzo

"Connection, Exchange and Sustainability are the core values of the Design Aesthetics Exhibition. To give shape and meaning to those principles, Luce e design Design Aesthetics Exhibition Ⅲ has drawn from art and nature to establish structures and spaces in the tight balance between openness and enclosure, with light connecting everything to the distant energy of the cosmic world."

—Jean-Jacques Lanzo

Do you recall that moment of quiet awe when you first stepped into the space? The ancient Greeks believed that connection was the sinew of all things, exchange the resonance of the soul, and sustainability the eternal pulse of nature. As Hesiod sang in his Theogony: “All things have their order—light and darkness alternate, heaven and earth are interwoven.” More than two millennia later, this June in Guangzhou, we took up light as our instrument and space as our canvas, and rewrote that ancient visual epic of connection, exchange, and endurance. And you—you were not merely a reader of that poem; you were its co-author.

"I attempt to use sculptural form to make space distinct." — Richard Serra

If you have ever stood before the monumental steel forms of Richard Serra, you will recall that singular sensation—enclosed by iron, yet moving as though within the lingering trace of wind. This time, we have transplanted that very experience into the fabric of the exhibition hall.
Those curved planes rising gently from the ground are not mere partitions, but forces welling up from the earth’s core. They converge inward, yet open outward, like two colossal hands slowly unfurling. As you pass between them, each step reconfigures your relationship with the work, with the space, and with the other. It is not you who observes the exhibition; it is the exhibition that observes you. It is not you who walks; it is the ground that guides your path. And as Serra declared, space is thereby rendered distinct.

At the apex where the curves converge, we once raised a dome.

It was not suspended on high, but stood beside you—an open, luminous sanctuary belonging to all who entered. It embodied nature, the most primordial embrace between humankind and the earth. Yet if you visited this year, you would have noticed: the dome is no longer present. All that remains are a few incisions on the curved walls—like the imprint of wind, like the trace of a kiss left by time.

Where did the dome vanish? We did not dismantle it. It chose to withdraw—to remind us that nature is not eternal, and that shelter is not ours by right. Those incisions are not absences; they are inscriptions of memory, the murmur that nature has left behind for the space.

After the dome withdrew, the space did not lapse into emptiness. On the contrary, it grew only more serene.

Through the incisions in the curved walls, light seeps inward—like primordial rays emerging from fissures in the earth. The exhibits are cradled within alcove-like structures, deep and solemn, exuding the quiet dignity of a subterranean cathedral. Standing there, you find your breath slowing of its own accord. Light no longer merely illuminates; it caresses each object, and in turn, it caresses you.

And then, you lift your gaze.

At the summit of the structure rests a core of light. It dwells nowhere else but just above you—close enough for you to feel its warmth, yet distant enough to bind you to the galaxies. The light does not flicker; it breathes—oscillating between brightness and shadow, warmth and coolness, like a distant star completing a solitary pulse. In that instant, you cease to ask, “What kind of lamp is this?” You simply realize: “So this is what it means to stand within the cosmos.”

The pavilion stands open on every side—no doors, no walls, only the paths you choose to follow.

To your left, an exhibition space; to your right, an artistic corridor; ahead, the forum; and should you turn, a quiet alcove for repose. At the center stands a green plant—unassuming in stature, yet you will find yourself circling it again and again. For with each turn, the light shifts, and the story the space tells transforms anew. You are not a preordained spectator; you are an accomplice in the making of this place.

If you could not make your way to Guangzhou this year, it matters little—the light endures, and the story awaits. Those planes, incisions, the core of light, and the central tree are not mere architectural elements; they are letters we have left for the future. May you step into their midst next time, let those curved planes bear you up, and allow that beam of light to find you.

For a space of true resonance is never conceived merely to be “visited.” It is meant to be lived.
