Life is finite, art is eternal.

Since its birth, art has always served as a bridge between appearance and eternity. Everything in the world has its blooming season. A flower blooms for but a few days, the ebb and flow of a mood lasts but a fleeting moment, yet when frozen on canvas, stitched into fabric, or molded into clay, they gain the power to transcend time. Just as those classical floral still lifes that have endured for centuries still speak to us of the eternal themes of life, transience and beauty.

Wang Xiaobo once wrote:

"One thing I have inherited from childhood is a rage against mediocre life, and an unyielding resolve not to sink into oblivion."

These words perfectly capture the spiritual underpinning of Yang Yi’s decade-long artistic journey.

Unwilling to be drowned out by the trivialities of daily routine, she picked up her brush. She etched fleeting moments of emotion, surging inner passions, and reverence for nature and life stroke by stroke onto the canvas. This is no escape from reality; rather, it is wielding art as a blade to cut through the deceptive calm of everyday life, revealing the gentle yet powerful undercurrent hidden beneath the surface.

This solo exhibition named "Undercurrent" holds a special significance for Yang Yi. This is not a concentrated presentation of her creations at a certain stage, but a record of her growth spanning a decade.

You can clearly see a complete growth trajectory, from the initial naive exploration of picking up a paintbrush in 2016 to the increasingly mature personal expression in 2026. All the works of the past decade have been presented. From the rigorous training of the academic school to gradually finding one's own artistic language, and now fully integrating life and passion into the canvas, every stroke bears the mark of time.

As early as in her early works in 2016, her preference for the natural world and her fondness for minute details in her aesthetic choices were already clearly evident.

Over the past ten years, she has continuously delved deeply into the core theme of "life and nature". In recent years, she has begun to boldly experiment by integrating various composite materials and exploring more possibilities of life forms on the canvas.

This keen perception of the fun and interest in life is particularly vividly demonstrated in her small-scale works from 2023. With just a few strokes, she captures the fleeting and lively moments in daily life.

Flowers and Daily Life: The Poetry Hidden in the Flames

In Yang Yi's works, flowers are never mere static objects.

She meticulously depicted the curvature of each petal and the trembling of each stamen with an almost obsessive precision, giving the static scene a sense of warmth akin to breathing. The white petals cast soft outlines in the light and shadow, with the interweaving of light and dark tones making the flowers seem as if they would pop out of the canvas at any moment. This extreme pursuit of details stems from her solid academic training.

Her tulip series conceals the three most touching postures of life.

In  "Embracing", the heads of two bright red tulips touch each other and their branches lean on each other. There is no superfluous embellishment, only the purest passion and bond. The deep green leaves layer upon layer serve as the base, with two red dots among the lush greenery. The strong color contrast is not at all flamboyant; instead, it makes this gentle embrace stand out conspicuously, adding a touch of weighty warmth to the solitary height of a single flower..

"Dance" is entirely dynamic and free. Above the vast expanse of gloomy dark green, dozens of orange-red tulips tilt and spread out in the direction of the wind. Their slender stems curve into soft arcs, as if the sound of leaves rustling could be heard in the next second. "The wind blows, and the flowers dance." The entire painting exudes a flowing vitality. The large size of the canvas brings this unrestrained beauty right to your face.

And that "Burning Red" is the most powerful stroke in the tulip series. She uses stacked pigments to create a thick texture, with the edges having a rough feel as if they were hand-chiseled. The intense bright red is like a burning flame, blooming alone against the backdrop of deep green.

In the exhibition hall, it stands in stark contrast to the large-scale "Dance", one large and one small, one dynamic and one static, precisely forming the two most complete aspects of .

Apart from flowers, there is another core element that runs through Yang Yi's creations throughout - natural creatures. From the cats that accompany her day and night to the sea lions that cling to her in the ocean, and then to the fantasy creatures she has built in her heart, she has recorded the most genuine appearance of life with her paintbrush and also told the tenderness of the coexistence of all things.

She reserved the most tenderness for her own cat. Those fleeting moments in daily life have turned into eternal beauty under her pen.In "The Same Curve", there lies her unique observation of details: the gentle arc formed by the cat's legs when it is crouching, surprisingly coincides with the outline of a cherry in front. This casual visual coincidence made her believe that all the beautiful things in the world carry the same gentle glow. "Orange Dream of the Little Cat" captures the lazy moment of a cat's afternoon nap. Its fluffy fur is bathed in warm light, and even its breathing seems to slow down. And in "A Corner" lies a small world that remains undisturbed.

As a seasoned enthusiast of animal costumes, she has been immersed in this imaginative circle for many years. The domestic animal circle culture has gone through more than two decades, gradually moving from a niche circle into the public eye. For Yang Yi, "fantasizing about creatures" has never been a simple hobby; rather, it is another way for her to communicate with nature. She extended this passion to her sculpture creation, constructing a fantasy creature called "Guardian Deity" that integrates the features of multiple animals. She deliberately blurs its species boundaries, not defining what it is, but focusing on highlighting the lines and texture of its body, emphasizing the authenticity of purity and nature. Those soft hairs and lively eyes are brimming with primitive and vigorous vitality.

In these works of living beings, what she wants to express is never one-way observation, but equal empathy. Human beings have never been the masters of nature; rather, they are coexisting with all living things. Whether it's the cat by your side, the sea lion in the ocean, or the guardian deity in your imagination, they are all gifts from nature. They are her tender tribute to life and also her most devout reverence for nature.

Undercurrent: Silent yet Surging Passion

This exhibition is titled "Undercurrents", which precisely captures the ten-year creative state of Yang Yi.

Her paintings rarely feature intense emotional outpourings or exaggerated visual bombardments, but they possess a serene power. Just like the silent currents beneath the sea surface, seemingly calm yet harboring tremendous energy. That is her dedication to art, her love for life, and her reverence for nature. Every detail, accumulated over time, forms the myriad worlds depicted in her paintings.

Red breath

For the past ten years, her creations have always maintained a rare sincerity. Don't pander, don't be pretentious. Face your inner self and life itself. She is not obsessed with grand narratives but turns her gaze to the overlooked beauties around her: the blooming of a flower, the posture of a tree, the unfolding of a cloud, and the sleeping position of a cat. These seemingly minor themes are precisely the most precious and touching parts of our daily lives. With her brush, she magnifies these moments, allowing us to slow down in the fast-paced life and feel the beauty and power of life itself.

When you enter this exhibition, please slow down and calm down. You will see the beauty of life in the trembling of the flower stamens, the power of nature in the eyes of the fantasy creatures, and the hidden beneath the waves, that heart that always loves and always grows.

YangYi

Born in Guang 'an, Sichuan Province in 2001, he graduated from the Second Studio of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2023, obtaining a bachelor's degree. Currently working and living in Guangdong.

Yang Yi's artistic practice has always been centered on the symbiotic relationship between life and nature, seeking a balance between micro-perception and macro-philosophical thinking. Animals and plants are the most frequently appearing protagonists in her paintings. They are not only the Windows through which she observes the world but also the carriers through which she expresses her emotions.

She not only captures the external vitality and charm of these life forms, but also devotes herself to exploring their deep-rooted spiritual qualities, as well as the subtle and mysterious connections between lives and between life and nature.

Through the meticulous depiction of these minute things, she transforms her thoughts on the essence of life into perceptible visual language, allowing the audience to touch the profound and rich emotional dimensions of life itself in the familiar daily scenes.
