MOUMOU will soon present artist Zhou Zhang's latest solo exhibition, Where Is My Home?. Home, wandering, tourists and the displacement of identity have been the themes of Zhou Zhang's work in recent years, reflecting his constant changes in residence. His studies in France, his temporary settlement in Jingdezhen, his wandering and "immersion" within it all, have led to his perception of the surrounding reality and temporary mediums, as well as his choice of language, ultimately culminating in his immersive observation and sensitivity.
In this process of "adaptation," he always manages to use the lightest and simplest language to express his helplessness, heaviness, and self-dissolution amidst wandering and displacement. This exhibition will feature his newly created sculptures and sound installations for the gallery space, as well as his video work "Whistle," created in 2019-2020 and shortlisted for the First Window section of the French Cinema de la République. These three works/groups together constitute his narrative of wandering from France to Jingdezhen, resonating in Beijing...

Mr. Pee
When living in France, finding a restroom can be quite a challenge. Public restrooms are pitifully scarce, so many people choose to spend 2 euros on a cup of coffee at a café just to use the restroom there, while even more people look for a corner or a wall to relieve themselves. I realized that when we (men) urinate in a corner, the perpendicular structure of the wall and floor gives the urine a physical property that could be considered sculptural: verticality. So I photographed my own urine marks, extracted their shapes, and used mirror-finished stainless steel to recreate them as sculptures that can stand independently. This is an act completed jointly by the individual and the city—a "non-choiced" form "manufactured" between the city and the person, akin to a unique "monument".
For this exhibition at MOUMOU, I have rearranged the dimensions of this series of sculptures—small, standard, and large—to further explore the concept.
Exhibiting this work in Beijing naturally invites viewers to identify with the experience of "Beijing drifters". The experience of encountering this series varies across the three scales: viewing from a distance (small), face-to-face (standard), and looking up (large). I believe that everyone who sees this series of "monuments" will relate it to their own position and circumstances.

Rotation
After returning to China, I ended up in Jingdezhen by chance. This city, once hailed as a "utopia" for the middle class. However, in reality, everyone here, whether local or "Jingdezhen drifters", is facing the problem of survival. Here, nearly half the population works in the ceramics industry. As an outsider with little connection to ceramics, I often find myself drifting among them, observing the dynamics of their relationships. I've dicovered that all ceramic-related work here is, in fact, connected to rotation—whether it's throwing, trimming,or pressing clay, every step must be completed while rotating. And rotation is tied to a center point; only by finding that center can the rotation continue. Isn't this exactly what our lives are like? In the endless cycle of daily life, we seek a center point to keep our lives spinning. It reminds me of Wan Xiaoli's song "The Spinning Top".

But what moved me most was the sound produced by the rotation—a sound truly born of life and labor, a sound belonging to the people here. So I want the clay and the ceramics to make their own sounds as they rotate round and round.

Whistle
Where is ahead?
Who are we?
Where are we going?
García Márquez once said, "The world is so new that many things have no names yet; we must point at them with our fingers". This is the first piece of work I've been satisfied with since coming to France. I felt lost for a while in this entirely new country; I had to learn a new language, a new way of life—everything was new.
I lost some of my ability to express myself; facing the future, I felt confused. I pointed in that direction, my words coming out slurred. Like an infant, I used sounds—whistles—to describe this world. "There, there, ther". Perhaps there was a touch of self-mockery in it as well. In the video, my right hand holds the DV camera while my left hand traces the contours of the city, accompanied by whistles that rise and fall with the city's undulating shape.
This is a work about self-identity and the city. Though my finger never touches the city's outline, the "whistling" creates a non-contact touch—a sensory tactile experience, a tearing apart of the distance between body and city, and a yearning for fusion.

Zhou Zhang
Zhou Zhang was born in Anhui in 1992. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Visual Media from Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in 2016 and his master’s degree in Fine Arts from the National Higher School of Art in Bourges (ENSA Bourges), France, in 2023, where he was the only student in his cohort to receive a special commendation (félicitation) from the jury. His work involves video, performance, installation, and painting, and he is particularly interested in the concept of “tourist” identity.
Zhou Zhang’s practice began with an exploration of cinematic language and existing imagery, while also reflecting on the medium’s self-referential nature. He often turns his camera toward his immediate surroundings, focusing on overlooked corners of daily life and re-presenting them through a cinematic lens. Moving to France to study marked a turning point in Zhou Zhang’s creative philosophy, this experience reshaped his mindset. Initially struggling to adapt to life in a foreign land, he was prompted to reflect on his identity, ultimately positioning himself as a tourist and continuously exploring the structural tension between tourism and residency in his work. His artistic language is minimalist, abstract, and cool-toned, evoking a sense of alienation, as he elevates humble, awkward, and intimate moments of daily life into universal allegories of existence.
