The Gilder Center, which unveiled its proposal in 2014, occupies approximately 21,367.70m² (230,000 sq ft), is a $465 million investment and includes six floors above ground, four of which are open to the public.
The building creates 33 connections between the 10 museum buildings to link the entire campus and a new entrance in Theodore Roosevelt Park on the west side of the museum at Columbus Avenue and 79th Street. The Gilder Center is a building set in the park at the same height as the old museum buildings on either side, designed with flowing, gentle curves as the moving elements.

A wide grand staircase on the east side of the Griffin Atrium, pivoting on the entrance, has been designed with seating steps on one side, walnut-covered treads and high risers, providing a place for visitors to rest and converse, while also serving as seating for the event program.
The improved circulation brought about by the completion of the Gilder Center will allow museum visitors to walk from the Columbus Avenue entrance all the way to Central Park West and vice versa.

The undulating façade of the Gilder Center provides a visual link between the two sides of the campus, with strikingly large bird-proof glass on the walls and walls of Milford pink granite, the same stone used at the entrance to Central Park West.

The diagonal pattern of the slabs evokes both the phenomenon of geological layering and the rich texture and surface design of the masonry on the 77th Street side of the museum.
