To see with wisdom, and perceive things as they are.
Seven artists unfold the hidden traces between memory and oblivion, resistance and acceptance, life and death, despair and hope. With a blue that is sensitive, fleeting, and uncertain, they let existence be truly seen.

Deviations in Homogeneity

Artist's Statement
This work utilizes the coupling of glass media and the cyanotype process to explore the transformation of light from wave energy into static imagery via material intervention.
Absolute transparency allows light to pass unhindered, preventing any photosensitive imprint. Consequently, image formation relies on the internal heterogeneity of the glass. Micro-textures and structural variations within the material refract, delay, and disrupt the light, altering the spatial distribution and intensity of photons to create the necessary conditions for an image to emerge.
Technically, deep blue glass is layered over sensitized paper and exposed to UV radiation. Although the glass appears opaque, light permeates through invisible micro-fissures and structural deviations. The resulting microscopic details provide a precise record of the material's internal inconsistencies.
All of this reveals one thing: traces always originate from the corners that deviate from absolute homogeneity. In the convergence of light and matter, the variations and heterogeneity within the material are what make it possible for memory to attach and develop.

分层 Stratification

Artist's Statement
Memories are stratified not to last forever, but to allow the past to be re-exposed, reshaped, and reintegrated into a changing self — order drawn from chaos, impermanently.
The pieces presented are inspired by Stratification; they explore the visualization and beauty brought forth from impermanence of self and in memories. Each piece aims to reveal implicit changes through the use of time, exposure, evaporation, acidity and decay. By combining cyanotype, xuan paper making and natural chaos, a conflict is highlighted between the motivation to capture time and to augment memory. Cyanotype as a chemical process can be manipulated to be permanent or impermanent, to evolve and reveal hidden layers over time. Traditionally, a moment is experienced and exposed, then consolidated as a memory "set."
In nature, stratification is often revealed over a millennium, when an architectural order emerges from the chaos of life. An onion is both a metaphor for revealing what's not visible on the surface and an experiential, accelerated example of stratification. In life, from birth our consciousness is shaped by layers and layers of experiences, but as we age the way we remember them is often distorted, diluted and sometimes they fade away.
Personally, in recent years I have witnessed how cognitive decline has affected a family member with dementia, which over time has revealed an accelerated decay, confusion and distortion to an otherwise ordered stratified memory.

四相 Four Shadows
Father and Son
Displacement of Materiality
小红书: J.Wang
Artist's Statement
Four Shadows and Father and Son are installation-based works from the project “Where the Ocean Ends, The Mountains Becoming” The former consists of four cyanotype prints on Kozo paper, mounted with acrylic to preserve texture while creating spatial lightness; the latter presents a cyanotype adaptation of the Father and Son comic, capturing the silent tension between father and son.
In Four Shadows, images document moments from the artist’s travels with his father, where bodily movement and shifting light overlap, merging time and space. Centered on the interplay of body and shadow, the father appears as both an individual and a figure shaped by patriarchal structures. Father and Son combines cyanotype light variations with the comic’s narrative, revealing tensions of identity and relationship while exploring how embodied experience is captured, fixed, and reconstructed.
Yuchen Wang is a Chinese visual artist working across photography, installation, and time-based media. He Obtain MFA degree from Rhode Island School of Design, his work explores unspoken emotional tensions within family and social structures. Rooted in personal memory, he examines loss, emotional repression, and intergenerational inheritance, focusing on how private feelings are shaped or silenced by cultural norms. Through carefully composed, ambiguous moments, Wang uses fragmented imagery and subtle gestures to explore tensions between presence and absence, visibility and concealment. Treating the photographic frame as mutable, he investigates how memory and emotion shift, questioning how personal histories are archived and reactivated beyond language.

Rosemary

Artist's Statement
Rosemary comes to me with its fragrance and mysterious past. It is an ordinary plant, yet it shares a deep connection with humanity. Throughout history, rosemary has been a symbol of love, protection, and remembrance. According to Christian legend, the Virgin Mary’s cloak turned its flowers blue, endowing the herb with the profound meaning of a mother’s protective love for her child. Shakespeare wrote in Hamlet, in grief over the loss of a child, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance; pray you love, remember.”
As a mother myself, I felt deeply connected to the vitality of rosemary and the stories behind it. In my works, rosemary, the blue cloak, and the sun have become symbolic expressions of love and protection. Through the cyanotype process, sunlight became part of the work, leaving charming traces to the images. It was an inspiring, experimental experience that the sun-printed images and my brushstrokes co-created the work together.

Let The Light In

Artist's Statement
This project is a “time capsule” I have created for my grandmother, using a craft from the dawn of the photographic era and connecting it to my own "origin."
The garment is based on the doctor's uniform, one of the symbols of her identity,
and is made of medical gauze.
In the final years of her life, Alzheimer's disease caused her memory to become disoriented and fragmented; for most of that time, she had returned to her prime.
Cyanotype is a process about "letting the light in to leave a trace." The interaction of time and light allows multiple processes to be preserved within a frozen image—just as memories may gradually vanish with the passage of time, or give birth to new echoes.
The images used in this work include fragments of old family photographs and scenes from my hometown. Through the unraveling of these memories, I seek to reassemble the threads of her life and create another kind of stillness for her existence.

Her works draw inspiration from everyday experiences, navigating between practical and the dramatic to create a sense of fluidity.

Artist's Statement
This project is born from personal experience. Over a decade of persistent pain has left my body fragile and sensitive. From a quiet passive struggle to confrontation and active interventions, to seeking a balance. I gradually came to coexist with my irreversible bodily changes.
The works use silica glass, representing the fragility of the body as a vessel; concrete highlighting strength and solidity; Tea scoby as a carrier, representing the skin, pointing to the living body and its accompanying struggles and trails. Applying cyanotype onto different materials, observing the resulting changes in surface appearance, I attempt to explore the inner connections between material properties, process, and personal narrative.
