'National Conference' of the Wine Industry: Competitiveness, Exports,
Sustainability, and Tourism Become Core Topics"

The European wine sector is one of the
strengths of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), including viticulture, which
falls under the exclusive competence of the European Union. An essential part
of this policy is the Protected Geographical Indications (PGIs) and Protected
Designations of Origin (PDOs), which create a strong connection between wine,
territory, culture, and local traditions, promoting quality, exports, and wine
and food tourism. The recent regulation approved by the European Parliament
further strengthens protection for over 1,610 PDOs and PGIs, of which just
under a third are produced in Italy. Starting from December 2023, all wines
sold in the European Union markets will also need to include new information on
nutritional values on their labels. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure a
consistent approach that safeguards the proper functioning of the European
market and the competitiveness of the sector. These are all topics at the heart
of the 'Stati Generali del vino' (General States of Wine), a discussion between
government representatives, EU institutions, regions, and sector stakeholders,
taking place tomorrow in the Protomoteca Hall of the Capitoline Hill in Rome,
featuring four panels of discussion, introduced by the speech of the Minister
of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, Francesco Lollobrigida.

In the last decade, Italian wine companies
have gained new market share, especially in North America and Asia. While the
European Union continues to be the main destination market for Italian exports
(40% in 2022), the weight of the United States and Canada has increased from
27% in 2012 to 29% in 2022, and Asian markets have also grown from 5% to 7%
over the past ten years. In parallel, there has been a requalification of
exports, with a decrease in the share of bulk wine (currently 19% by volume) in
favor of sparkling and bottled wines, representing 24% and 57% of Italian wine
exports, respectively. These findings are from the research study titled "Italian
Wine in the World: Trends, Positioning, and Prospects" conducted by
Nomisma as part of the Agronetwork tour promoting agri-food products and
territories, specifically focused on the world of wine. The event took place at
Castello Nipozzano, the historic Frescobaldi family winery in Chianti Rufina. The
research confirms that Italian wine is a driving force behind Made in Italy
exports, maintaining its position as the top category in 2022 (13% of the
total) of Italian agri-food exports. This trend has been steadily increasing,
considering that Italian wine exports have grown from 4.7 billion euros in 2012
to 7.8 billion euros in 2022 (a 68% increase in 10 years). In the last year
alone, exports have risen from 7.1 to 7.8 billion euros.

Grape cultivation is the agricultural
sector with the highest pesticide usage and is at high risk of biodiversity
loss. This is not only an economic and environmental issue but also a health
concern. The ongoing climate change is expected to exacerbate this problem. The
project's goal is to experiment with innovative approaches to improve the
resilience of the grapevine system to plant diseases while reducing the use of
pesticides. The project is funded by the European Commission with 5 million
euros and will involve 18 institutions and companies covering the most
important biogeographical regions in the EU related to grape cultivation.

From the seeds of Sariki and Beer
discovered in the Avdat National Park, the vines used to produce the most
popular wine in the Mediterranean 1,500 years ago are making a comeback. It
could be aptly called "archaeo-enology" to tell the story that
originates from Avdat National Park, Israel, where vines of two ancient
varieties - Sariki and Beer - have been planted. These varieties were recovered
from seeds found in archaeological excavations and made available for
production through innovative DNA research conducted by Professor Guy Bar-Oz of
the University of Haifa and Dr. Meriv Meiri of Tel Aviv University. They were
planted in the exact same location where they were cultivated 1,500 years ago.

I Musei del Cibo of Parma are exhibiting
for the first time at Mercanteinfiera Autunno (September 30 - October 8) a
selection from the rich collection of contemporary design corkscrews preserved
by the Wine Museum of Sala Baganza (PR). Under the shadow of a giant corkscrew,
visible from the entrance of the access pavilion, it will be possible to admire
the collateral exhibition at the 40th edition of Mercanteinfiera, titled
"In vino veritas. Le infinite forme del cavatappi" (In wine, the
truth. The infinite forms of the corkscrew). For the exhibition, on September
30 and October 1, 7, and 8 (Saturdays and Sundays), visitors who show their

Within the context of the "Petrosino
di mare e di vino" event, the first event of this three-day focus on the
local wine sector will be dedicated to the cooperative model. Through the conference "Quale futuro
per il vino cooperativo siciliano? Il ruolo della cooperazione nei nuovi
scenari del mercato mondiale del vino" (What future for Sicilian
cooperative wine? The role of cooperation in the new
scenarios of the global wine market), which will take place on Friday,
September 29th at 5:30 pm at the Hotel Baglio Basile, the aim is to promote
reflection on cooperation and the opportunities it can still offer to our
community. The conference, jointly promoted by the administrations of Petrosino
and Marsala, will be an opportunity to assess the health of our social wineries
and, at the same time, analyze the possible prospects of an ever-changing world
of wine. It will also be an opportunity to exchange "best practices"
with other cooperative entities. "The current crisis is also a crisis of
an organizational and socio-economic system, that of the social wineries to
which the history of viticulture in our territory is indissolubly linked. We
still firmly believe in the cooperative model and its values, which is why,
with Friday's meeting, we want to engage in a logic of exchange of practices
and models with entities where social wineries play a more dynamic and
economically effective role," declare Mayor Anastasi and Mayor Grillo.
"We will always support farmers and their wineries as members, and we will
support them in their legitimate request for support and assistance in this
extremely difficult time. But to fully fulfill our duties as local
administrators and exercise our political function, we must also provide our
contribution in identifying a new perspective, defining new practices and
models that structurally protect the viticulture sector and once again make
social wineries and their members protagonists of the territory."
