Early work of Kim Saeng Hwa

本次个人展所呈现的《生》系列作品反映了本人此前一直追求的新艺术的创作历程，通过将作品按制作时期进行分类，来观察作品主题变迁及表现方式的转变。

首先是”生活”—— 学习沉淀时期。该时期主要以“日常生活”为主题进行创作，其特点是用幽默诙谐的陶瓷人物雕塑批判性地展示了在社会中的人际关系。学校毕业后我选择继续留学深造，全新而陌生的环境让我转移了关注点，从原本的社会问题转变为聚焦身边的人和自然。

The "Life" series introduced in this solo exhibition reflects the history of my personal creation that always pursue new art. We will observe changes in themes and expressions by categorizing my work into periods.

The first period is "Life". During my college days, I created ceramic sculptures, mainly created with the theme of "everyday life". The work was characterized by the humorous and contradictory expression of the critical moments in human relationships, and my time abroad gave me an unfamiliar environment observe my interest from people and the wonderful nature around me to society.

第二是“生存”—— 毕业后的创作时期。我埋头创作了很多大型陶瓷雕塑，其中最具代表性的是将昆虫拟人化的《林中交响音乐会》系列。该作品展现了想象中昆虫交响乐团的演出场景，隐喻人类在大自然中的“生存”状况。将其放置在公园，当人们在公园休息时，就像是患者在接受医生治疗一样，生活中的痛苦得到缓解。

The second period is "Survival". After graduating from graduate school, I focused on creating and producing a large-scale ceramic sculpture. My representative work was Symphony Concert of the Nature, which expressed human "Survival" situation in nature by personifying grass beetles. The installed artwork included imaginary music played by bugs in a recreation park, aimed to relieve people’s fatigue and pain as a doctor treat a patient.

第三是“生长”——海外生活时期。在此阶段作品主题逐渐从“治愈他人”转变为“自我探索”。由于经历了十年的海外求学和教职生活，无论在中国还是在韩国，我都像是个“异乡人”。渐渐地我开始尝试将笔下的平面绘画转换为立体作品，这不但拓宽了陶瓷材料创作的领域，还让我感受到了新创作所带来的喜悦。《自我》系列和《边际人》系列更是其中的呕心沥血之作，随着年岁渐长、社会地位和生活态度都发生了变化，这两个系列尽数记录了我这一路走来的“生长”过程。

The third period is "Growth". After ten years of living abroad and teaching in the school, I changed my work theme from healing others to self-exploration, while working on my Ph.D. and teaching students. The reason for the change I viewed and drew myself as a stranger in Korea and China and then converted the drawings to a three-dimensional form, which expanded the field of my ceramic creation and brought me joy of new creation. The "Ego"series and "Marginal Men" series were classic makings which recorded the social position and daily life that varied over time as part of my "Growth" process.

第四是“生涯”——重新思考的时期。长期的海外生活使得自身认同感变得模糊，我渐渐意识到我与他人生活轨迹的不同，自然而然地开始思考艺术、人生、社会和生命之间的关系。在获得深刻的人生感悟后，我创作了关于寻找自我认同的《生》系列作品。《生》系列作品囊括了上述“生活”“生存”和“生长”的各个时期，重新审视此前的人生，可以说《生》系列便是我“艺术生涯”的形象化表现。作品多个块体盘根错节地交织在一起，错综复杂的动态显得生动而富有变化，我将创作过程中的痕迹原封不动地保留下来，形成细腻和粗糙之间的鲜明对比，这使得整个作品在具备复杂形态的同时并不缺乏内在的规律美感，这不仅是为了展示我的内心世界，也是为了表现我的生活态度。

The fourth period is "Life". The "Life" series holds the deep realization of naturally accepting my ambiguous identity due to my long period abroad, recognizing that my life is different from that of others, and contemplating the relations between creation, society and life. This series of work embodies a person's lifetime, which is all inclusive of my past handiwork, including "Life", "Survival", "Growth", and it is a representation of one's life through the aggregation and re-edition of the daily lives of others. The form of the artwork shows each story vibrantly and dynamically woven in a complex manner. However, the form allows for the interpretation of complexity by leaving the gap between delicate and rough expressions. I reveal my inner world and express my attitude towards life in this art.
