The home of Buryats
By A Yin
The Buryats are a group of nomadic Mongolians. There are more than 8000 Buryats living in West(Xi) and East(Dong) of Xinihe sumu in Ewenki Autonomous Banner of Hulunbeir, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, known as the Buryats of Xinihe, also called the Buryats of China.
The Image Series is a family image archive of Xinihe Buryats. Family is the epitome of society, and the inner support of the development and progress of the times. The works takes Buryat family as the core, the circular sheep pens as the clue, the family, possessions and home as the symbol, and the form of portrait and home correspondence, reflecting the past and today, inheritance and development of the Buryats with images. By means of comparison, the files are retained for the Chinese Buryat families, and the Chinese nomadic Mongols in the 21st century are also recorded.
The series documents Xinihe Buryat steppes throughout the year, modern nomadic life in the 21st century. Xinihe Buryats live on a vast grassland, rich in mountains, forests and rivers. The 4 gachas of Xinihe xi sumu are located in the vast flat grassland, and the 6 gachas of Xinihe dong sumu are located at the junction of Hulunbuir grassland and the Greater Khingan Mountains, belonging to the mountain grassland. After the distribution of pasture by household, each household was allocated several pieces of pasture in different places. bullock-carts have long since disappeared, and herdsmen drive tractors to take turns on several pastures.
The series features two photographs of a Buryat family in Xinihe. The first is a family photo or a portrait of the couple or one or two family members. The second is a documentary of the whole family or one or two family members posing next to their round sheep pen. The combination of these two photographs constitutes the real memory of the time of Buryats in China. These photos will become the solidification of emotions and times, owners and homes, life and ecology.
How precious these images are, by which the lost years of the nomadic Buryat Mongols are recorded , leaving an irreplicable archive of the past history.
