Finally this year, I was able to organize my trip to the "Loira Valley," which is a little dream come true for a wine, literature, and castle enthusiast like me. This region of France has always inspired me, both for the history infused in every small village nestled along the riverbanks and for its wine production, among the most fascinating, grand, and renowned in the whole country.

葡萄酒产区沿着法国最长的河流——卢瓦尔河流域延伸，从奥尔良一直延伸到南特。从这些地区产出了一些最著名的葡萄酒，包括Sancerre、Pouilly-Fumé、Vouvray、Savennières、Quarts de Chaume、Montlouis、Chinon、Bourgueil、Menetou-Salon和Muscadet。

The wine region stretches along the course of the Loira River, the longest in France, from Orleans to Nantes. From these areas come the most famous wines, belonging to AOC such as Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Vouvray, Savennières, Quarts de Chaume, Montlouis, Chinon, Bourgueil, Menetou-Salon, and Muscadet.

Although various types of wines are produced, the Loira Valley is especially famous for its white wines, particularly Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc. The Loira Valley is also renowned for Muscadet, a wine known for its ideal pairing with seafood, produced from the Melon de Bourgogne grape variety.

During my tour, I sought to combine visits to the main castles of the Loira with exploring vineyard cellars, savoring traditional French dishes, and wandering through picturesque medieval villages. Are you ready? Let's go!

The starting point of this journey in the Loira Valley is Bourges, a charming medieval village famous for its colorful half-timbered houses that grace the historic center. The first thing that comes to mind is to request a glass of excellent Sancerre, one of the most renowned appellations of the great wines of the Loira, to accompany a platter of typical cheeses... Welcome to France!

I leave Bourges and head towards Saumur. The entire area is famous for the presence of numerous troglodyte caves carved into tuff and chalk: many of these have been converted into wine cellars by the prestigious wineries of the region. Others are now used as hotels or restaurants, and it is also possible to visit entire underground villages, a unique experience to be enjoyed in this Loira region.

For my visit, I choose a winery in the center of Saumur, Luis de Grenelle. Founded in 1859, the estate has continued to produce sparkling wines in the depths of its cellars, which are dug 12 meters below the city. These former quarries, from which tuff stone was extracted in past centuries to build the castles of the Loira Valley, now welcome wine enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world for cellar tours, and I must say the impact is evocative and fascinating. The galleries used for aging the wines were once the streets of the underground village, used by the inhabitants to escape attacks, and they still retain the signs with the names of the streets.

The grape varieties cultivated in the Loira Valley and transformed into wines by Maison Louis de Grenelle encourage every kind of bold creativity. Chenin is the flagship variety, adding freshness and fruit that age beautifully in the tuff stone cellars. Chardonnay expresses mineral notes, finesse, and elegance, as showcased in the "Crémant de Loira" Brut version, aged on the lees for 18/24 months on the racks.

Continuing towards another very famous area, which gives life to one of the best-known appellations in the Loira, the AOC Touraine, I can combine a visit to the famous Château de Chenonceau with a visit to the winery "Le Père Auguste.

The Château de Chenonceau is also known as the "Castle of the Ladies" in honor of the women who made it famous, from Catherine de' Medici to Diane de Poitiers and Madame Dupin. It is a masterpiece of history and architecture.

The "Le Pere Auguste" winery is located just 2km from the castle and offers tours of the troglodytic cellars dating back to the 19th century, along with guided tastings of Touraine & Touraine Chenonceaux wines. In addition to these traditional Loire Valley grape varieties, you can also taste the "Côt," a cousin of Malbec, brought here by King Francis I to enjoy at his Château d'Amboise.
