VISTA
The grand panorama of the world often lies concealed within tiny corners. Compared with vast, sweeping vistas, those fragmentary scenes tucked away in cracks, blank spaces and the creases of daily life seem to lay bare life’s innate truth and authenticity more vividly.
Huang Saifeng’s paintings represent an ongoing spiritual practice revolving around void, light and inner state. Over the years, he has gradually cast off the fetters of figurative storytelling, shifting the core of his creation to an intangible spiritual realm. Rejecting sharp lines and intense emotional outpouring, he builds hazy, ethereal and fluid visual realms through thinly layered, translucent and gradient textures. Light diffuses, drifts, fades and flickers across the canvas, while space stretches boundlessly amid the interplay of void and substance.

Rooted in the Eastern Taoist philosophy of "the great form is formless", Huang Saifeng captures the hidden spiritual states of modern humanity amid the marginal spaces where reality and illusion converge, probing the essential meaning of existence. He invites viewers to reach the quietest, most authentic recesses of their inner selves through the blank voids in his works.
Contrasting Huang Saifeng’s art of contemplating the void, Guo Jian’s creations reveal the inner soul through tangible objects. He keeps his gaze fixed on the simplicity of the everyday, adopting origami as a constant pictorial motif running through years of his artistic practice. The folds, undulations, bends and openings of paper serve as the most fitting metaphor for the vicissitudes of life: a sheet folded, crumpled, unfolded and marked with lasting creases mirrors human experience and growth.

Guo Jian’s canvases are restrained and uncluttered, with compact compositions and pure hues. Using minimalist contemporary visual language, he strips away superfluous embellishments to return all objects to their original essence. He sensitively captures the solitude woven into growth, faint glimmers amid perseverance, and resilience within ordinariness, quietly embedding personal emotions, traces of time and reflections on life into origami’s folds. Through streamlined depictions of concrete forms, he blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Though his works appear serene and delicate on the surface, they hold profound observations of life and profound empathy for human existence within.

These two artists approach life and self from divergent perspectives — one leaning toward the intangible void, the other toward tangible matter. Both pierce superficial appearances through minute details to reach the depths of the spirit. The title Glimpses of Hidden Corners means far more than merely seeing small, overlooked spaces. It signifies reclaiming perceptions dulled by hurried routines, reconnecting with the self overlooked amid a sprawling world, and rediscovering tranquility diluted by endless noise.
May every visitor stepping into this exhibition slow their pace and quiet their minds. Within each painting, each scene, every tiny corner and stray ray of light, observe the world, examine your heart, perceive all creation — and behold yourself.
