As the pen tip sketched the romantic contours of flowing skirt hems, as raw fabric took shape into elegant silhouettes on the dress form, and as supple fabrics transformed into exquisite miniature haute couture gowns, Li Zhiyi completed a journey in fashion design, from creative sketches to finished garments, presenting a fashion exhibition of works unique to a young designer in the wooden cabins amidst the woods at the Grassland Music Festival.

From the very first stroke, she sketched numerous gown designs on her drawing board. Floor-length mermaid hems, fluttering bows, cascading layers of tulle, and three-dimensional floral embellishments—shades of blue, purple, gold and magenta outlined the silhouettes of the gowns, weaving playful ingenuity and romantic imagination into every line. Each sketch represented a meticulous conception of the gown’s form, cut and structural details, concealing a unique understanding of sartorial aesthetics.

Once the sketches are finalised, the rigorous process of draping and pattern-making begins. Plain muslin is secured to the dress form as the shoulder straps are adjusted for the perfect curve, the waist and hips are cinched, and the flow of the fishtail skirt is shaped. The pattern structure is refined through repeated adjustments until the basic silhouette of the garment is established. From two-dimensional drawings to three-dimensional garments, every stitch refines the proportions of the pattern, transforming the ideas on paper into a solid foundation for sewing and shaping, patiently honing the balance and beauty within the pattern.

Beyond the creation of the complete mini-dress ensemble, Li Zhiyi also infused her delicate sentiments into every stitch. In class, she bent over her work, carefully cutting flowing iridescent tulle and handcrafting elegant camellia ribbons to present to her younger classmates in the graduating year. With every snip and fold, she sculpted the floral forms; with every thread and strand, she wove tenderness, crystallising the bonds of friendship and graduation wishes into exquisite floral embellishments. While immersing herself in the creative pursuits of fashion design, she carried the warmth of her classmates in her heart. This young designer possesses not only the craftsmanship to refine exquisite garments but also a gentle and passionate character.

After selecting materials, sewing and embellishing, four mini-dresses in distinctly different styles were stunningly completed: a gilded tulle skirt, light and opulent, with an off-the-shoulder tulle detail paired with a flared waistband, the trailing train exuding a gentle aura; a navy blue gilded mermaid skirt, cool and sophisticated, where a satin bow clashes with textured fabric, the pleated mermaid skirt creating a dramatic effect; The dusty pink satin gown is gentle and refined, featuring a large bow-adorned halter neckline paired with a flowing mermaid silhouette, creating soft and elegant lines; the rose-red feathered gown is bright and vibrant, with a voluminous feathered neckline, three-dimensional floral embellishments and a shimmering tulle train, making it both lively and eye-catching. Every finished garment faithfully recreates the creativity of the design sketches, with meticulous attention to fabric texture, beaded trimmings, and structural detailing.

With a gentle evening breeze and surrounded by blossoms, the woodland cabin was transformed into a unique catwalk. Design sketches hung in a staggered arrangement around the exhibition walls, whilst four exquisite mini-gowns were displayed on stands, adorned with floral drapes and soft lighting, creating an atmosphere brimming with charm. Amidst the romantic night-time setting of the grassland music festival, this intimate fashion show officially made its debut. Passers-by paused to admire the display, whilst fellow students gathered to observe the works, witnessing the transformation from hand-drawn sketches to finished garments, and observing the young designer’s focus, craftsmanship and abundant creative talent.

A sketch, a mannequin, a gown. This mini-gown exhibition is not merely a practical exercise in fashion design; it is a precious record of Li Zhiyi weaving her fashion dreams through creativity and craftsmanship. May she continue to hold her brush and pick up her needle and thread, never ceasing her journey along the path of design, crafting more stunning works as she sets out to conquer her own fashion horizons.
