Looking back at the history of art, many artists who later achieved fame showed their talent early in childhood. Picasso and Mozart, for instance, revealed extraordinary gifts through their youthful doodles and notes. These sparks of talent, if carefully nurtured and guided, can grow into a light that illuminates an era. But talent is only the beginning. What truly makes a master is decades of unwavering dedication and refinement. That small "something different" in childhood eventually accumulates, over time, into a miracle of art history.

The works featured throughout In a Child's Brush – A Special Exhibition of Early Works by Wang Mingming and Fang Chuxiong are not the mature, celebrated styles for which the two artists are best known. Instead, they are exceptional pieces created in their childhood and youth. Diverse in subject matter and style, rich with the atmosphere of their time, these works may appear technically naive, yet they overflow with natural brilliance and innocent wonder. Unbound by technique and unshaped by fixed style, they are like uncarved jade, offering a glimpse of artistic talent at its very first light and the most genuine, untamed vitality of art.

Wang Mingming began painting at a very young age, with his first works published as early as age six, earning him a reputation as a child prodigy. As a boy, he was deeply immersed in the traditions of Chinese art, particularly the legacy of Qi Baishi. Under his father's attentive guidance, he entered the Beijing Children's Palace at eight to study painting, where he received direct instruction from masters such as Li Kuchan and Wu Zuoren. His childhood works have been exhibited in more than thirty countries and have won numerous international awards. This early brilliance, nurtured by both family devotion and the wisdom of renowned teachers, laid a solid foundation for the artistic heights he would later achieve.

Fang Chuxiong showed a deep love for painting from early childhood. At five, he became a student of Wang Lanruo, and later studied under Liu Changchao. At seven, his work was published in national magazines such as Honglingjin. At eight, he traveled to Guangzhou, the provincial capital, to exhibit his work. At nine, he received an album of Qi Baishi's paintings as a gift. Some of his childhood works were selected for exhibitions in Hong Kong, as well as in Hungary, Germany, and elsewhere, earning him the praise that his "brush astonished all who saw it" and the title of "child prodigy."  Through the solid training in traditional brushwork he received in his childhood, his later works came to embody a profound classical elegance.

Wang Mingming and Fang Chuxiong studied under celebrated masters, anchored their work in tradition, and boldly broke new ground. Their childhood works had already drawn the attention of the art world and appeared in major publications. These pieces are not only of scholarly interest but also of genuine artistic value, offering a vivid record of how an older generation of artists carried tradition forward while making it their own.

This exhibition looks back to the very origins of their artistic paths. In these raw, sincere brushstrokes, viewers can feel the first glimmer of emerging talent and understand how mentorship and dedication, planted in childhood, took root as a lifelong pursuit of art.

Finally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Wang Mingming and Mr. Fang Chuxiong for generously donating their precious childhood works to Shenzhen Art Museum. Their sincerity and selflessness are deeply moving. We pay tribute to these two distinguished artists for their dedication and contributions to art education, and wish them enduring artistic vitality and a legacy carried on by generations of students.
