The rosary, also known as prayer beads, is a counting tool used by religious believers during prayer and recitation. It is widely practiced in Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity. The Rosary, however, belongs specifically to Catholicism, a branch of Christianity, and the recitation of the Rosary forms part of the daily devotion of Catholic believers.
The word “Rosary” derives from the Latin Rosarium, meaning “a crown of roses.”Through the repeated recitation of prayers, Catholics symbolically offer fragrant roses to God and the Virgin Mary. The Rosary is structured around four groups of Mysteries — the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. I borrow this textual structure to frame the exhibition, allowing the viewer to experience the works as a continuous strand of interconnected beads.
Through years of artistic practice, I have come to realize that I tend to place personal lived experience within broader historical and temporal contexts for observation and reflection. Within this framework, my work ultimately returns to the question of the human condition. Anxieties surrounding life and death can perhaps only find consolation through unconditional faith. During many years of field research, I have sensed that indigenous folk beliefs in China persist in a fragile yet enduring state among the people. At the same time, I have observed that Christianity — a religion introduced from abroad — has gained a vast and continuously growing body of believers in China. Compared with the widespread presence of Protestantism in urban areas, Catholicism exerts an even stronger appeal in remote rural regions.
The realization of this exhibition is connected to my affinity with Xi’an, a symbolic site marking the earliest introduction of Christianity into China. It is also a tribute to the pioneering spirit of the Shanxi photography movement of the 1980s, which first advocated “breaking away from collective narratives and respecting the dignity of the individual.”
Through the daily handling and caressing of rosary beads, they gradually become luminous and translucent. Likewise, the passage of life is shaped through our own careful carving and polishing.
