度假作为一种日常生活的中断,为人们提供休闲的体会。田园风光、海滨度假、田野苦旅、户外露营,不同的度假也提供不同社会学意义上的「景观」——它们除了界定人们关于休闲的认知,也记录着地域、年轮的画像,成为个人身份的一种标识途径。而在更广义的休闲中,我们识别娱乐,也识别仪式。我们对休闲的渴望,似乎总是先于休闲本身而存在。
本次展览的探讨从海口的滨海建筑与候鸟式移民,蔓延至南方氤氲植物。而麦当劳生日派对、袁世凯和西点生日蛋糕与深圳城市扩张,双流郊区看得见飞机起降的农家乐——它们共同指向一个问题:谁提供关于休闲的承诺?
休闲的历史,也是"远方"被持续生产的历史。展览同期呈现研究文献「四川度假小史」,该文献从19世纪西方旅行者入川的路线与文字起步,经由文人的山居度假、计划经济时代的疗养院制度、九十年代成都涌现的西餐厅与世界乐园,一路抵达今日艺术家驻留的游牧现场。
Vacation, as an interruption to the rhythms of everyday life, offers people an experience of leisure. Pastoral scenery, seaside retreats, arduous journeys through the countryside, outdoor camping — different forms of vacation yield different "landscapes" in the sociological sense. Beyond defining how people understand leisure, these landscapes document portraits of place and time, becoming a means through which personal identity is articulated. And within the broader terrain of leisure, we recognize both entertainment and ritual. Our desire for leisure, it seems, always precedes leisure itself.
The inquiry of this exhibition begins with the coastal architecture of Haikou and its migratory "snowbird" residents, spreading outward to the humid, haze-laden flora of the south. McDonald's birthday parties, Yuan Shikai and Western-style birthday cakes, the urban expansion of Shenzhen, a farmhouse restaurant on the outskirts of Shuangliu where planes can be watched taking off and landing — together, these point toward a single question: who holds the power to promise leisure?
The history of leisure is also a history of the continuous production of "the elsewhere." Presented alongside the exhibition is the research publication Notes on Leisure: Sichuan Holidays, which traces a path beginning with the routes and writings of nineteenth-century Western travelers entering Sichuan — moving through the mountain retreats of literati, the sanatorium system of the planned economy era, the Western restaurants and theme parks that emerged in 1990s Chengdu — and arriving, finally, at the nomadic residencies of artists today.


白色空间展示架上绘画与摄影为主要媒介的作品,将“度假”、“迁徙”、“回忆”、“休闲”与“娱乐”等现代生活的诸多切面予以锚定。鲁香凝的作品脱胎于一段在海南驻留的生活,在海滨鳞次栉比的第二居所楼群中,泳池从不缺席。它将水与海隔绝开来,在承担身体训练职能的同时,确认了一种海滨休闲的仪式。王婷将双眼放在树叶与花朵的间隙中,在人类的视线之外,南方植物的密语粘稠,令人浮想联翩。张晓发现了成都双流国际机场附近一处饶有趣味的农家乐——它重新组织了一种大众娱乐的方式,在一次性桌布、红色塑料椅之外,建立了一种因地制宜的乡土日常。这些作品构成了关于日常的微观视觉档案,记录了地理位移中的景观变迁,以及附着于闲暇时光中的物、场与符号。
The white-space display stand presents works primarily in the form of painting and photography, anchoring various facets of modern life — "vacation," "migration," "recollection," "leisure," and "entertainment."
Lu Xiangning's works draw from a period of living in Hainan. Amid row upon row of second homes along the coastline, swimming pools are a constant presence — isolating water from the sea, serving the function of physical exercise while inscribing a ritual of seaside leisure. Wang Ting turns her gaze into the gaps between leaves and blossoms. Beyond the reach of human sight, the dense murmurs of southern flora feel viscous and clinging, stirring an endless stream of thought. Zhang Xiao stumbled upon a curious farmhouse near Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport — a place that reframes popular entertainment, carving out a vernacular rural everyday life from behind disposable tablecloths and red plastic chairs.
Together, these works form a micro visual archive of daily life, tracing the shifting landscapes of geographical displacement and the objects and symbols that cling to leisure time.
















黑色空间的作品转向动态的影像叙事,在此展览对“度假”与“迁徙”等母题展开联想,借由休闲的名义探寻历史记忆与城市现代化等命题。生日蛋糕在清末传入中国,作为西方文化与商品经济的象征符号,它的流行与近现代的政治气候紧密相关。受饮食人类学的启发,影片从创作者的童年生日场景出发,以档案式论文式的方式针对中式生日蛋糕、肯德基麦当劳生日聚会服务、冷战落幕等因素进行探究。尝试厘清生日蛋糕及其配套仪式在近代中国以及华人社会的传播与本土化。调查范围涵盖近现代报纸档案、新闻、电影、家庭档案、华人蛋糕食谱等。
The works gathered in the "Black Space" move toward a more dynamic, narrative engagement with images. Through the lens of "vacation" and "migration," the exhibition uses the guise of leisure as an entry point — probing deeper questions of historical memory and urban modernization. Birthday cake was introduced to China in the late Qing Dynasty around the early 20th century. As a symbol of Western culture and commodity economy, its popularity is closely related to the political climate of the modern and contemporary era. Inspired by food anthropology, this essayistic archive film investigates the spread and localization of birthday cakes and their associated rituals in modern China and Chinese communities worldwide. It also examines the critical influence of birthday party services provided by KFC and McDonald’s, which entered China after the economic reforms of the 1980s. The investigation covers newspaper, news, films, family archives and Chinese-style cake decoration tutorials.








「四川度假小史」试图从20世纪四川的休闲史切入,重新理解一种地域性的度假文化如何被长期塑造:从西方旅行者入川、山居避暑、疗养院制度,到九十年代成都的西餐厅、世界乐园与今日艺术家驻留现场,度假始终折射着时代对于时间、劳动与“远方”的想象。
在特邀对谈嘉宾周鼎老师的相关分享中,他进一步指出四川的“度假传统”或许比现代旅游更古老。从古蜀神树到魏晋“卧游”,中国人始终在山水之间寻找一种精神性的短暂出逃。只是到了今天,当社交媒体与消费主义不断制造“打卡式旅行”,度假也逐渐失去了原本的“灵氛”。或许比起抵达远方,更重要的是重新学会“神游”——让旅行成为一种带着感知与思考的精神漫游。
Notes on Leisure: Sichuan Holidays traces fragments of leisure culture in 20th-century Sichuan in an attempt to understand how a regional imagination of “vacation” has been gradually shaped over time. From Western travelers entering Sichuan, mountain retreats and sanatorium systems, to Chengdu’s Western restaurants and theme parks of the 1990s, and today’s nomadic artist residencies, the idea of vacation has continuously reflected each era’s imagination of time, labor, and the “elsewhere.”
In a related talk, invited guest Zhou Ding further suggested that Sichuan’s tradition of “vacation” may in fact predate modern tourism itself. From the sacred trees of ancient Shu civilization to the Wei-Jin practice of “spiritual wandering” (shenyou), Chinese people have long sought moments of mental and spiritual escape within landscapes and nature. Yet today, as social media and consumer culture increasingly turn travel into a performative act of “checking in,” vacations seem to have lost some of their original aura and transcendence. Perhaps, more important than arriving somewhere distant is relearning how to “wander spiritually” — to approach travel as a form of reflective and imaginative drifting.






鲁香凝 Amber Xiangning Lu
生于北京,建筑学出身。2019 年毕业于 UAL 切尔⻄艺术学院纯艺术专业,2023 年硕士毕业于 UCL 斯莱德艺术学院雕塑专业,常驻广州及伦敦。她的作品由绘画、声音、装置等不同的媒介共同构成。通过构建介于现实与虚构之间的氛围,她将过去与现在,真实与想象混合起来,在模糊了空间界限的同时,以诗意的方式探讨生活中令人感到不确定与不安的瞬间。
Amber Xiangning Lu was born in Beijing. She graduated from UAL Chelsea College of Art in 2019 with a degree in Fine Art. In 2023 she got her MFA degree in Sculpture from UCL Slade School of Fine Art. She is currently based in Guangzhou and London. Her practice explores the ambiguity of space through diverse mediums, including painting, sound, video, and installation. Conceptually, her work is grounded in her background in architecture, a field she studied for six years in Shanghai and Paris. By creating an atmosphere that straddles the line between reality and fiction, she interweaves the past with the present, the real with the imagined. In this process, she poetically examines moments of uncertainty and unease in life, while subtly dissolving the boundaries between psychological and physical spaces.
王婷 Wang Ting
1992年生于海南海口,现工作生活于广州。人类通过感官的所见所感来认知世界,沾染了来自过往的记忆、梦境与希望,形成了虚幻飘忽的氛围,一切实体都不再恒定。当世人想要看清物品原本的模样时,却一再失败:TA所能看见的,只有来自私人或集体的故事与语言。我们将永远停留在这份湿漉漉的雾霭里。
Born in Haikou, Hainan in 1992, currently lives and works in Guangzhou. Humans perceive the world through the senses — yet what is seen and felt is already steeped in memories, dreams, and hopes carried over from the past, giving rise to an atmosphere that is illusory and adrift, in which nothing solid remains fixed. When one attempts to see things as they truly are, the effort falls short, again and again: what can be perceived are only the stories and languages — private or collective — that have settled over them. We will forever remain suspended in this damp, lingering haze.
张晓 Zhang Xiao
1981年出生于山东烟台,2005年毕业于烟台大学建筑设计系。在2009年成为摄影艺术家之前,他曾于《重庆晨报》担任新闻摄影记者。2018年,张晓获得哈佛大学罗伯特·加德纳摄影基金。张晓的《海岸线》系列曾获得法国汇丰银行摄影奖(2011)、法国才华摄影基金中国区冠军(2010)及候登科摄影奖(2009),《他们》系列则在2010年获得三影堂摄影奖大奖。张晓曾参与哈佛大学皮博迪考古和民族学博物馆的展览“社火”,UCCA尤伦斯当代艺术中心的展览“2015年作为理由”和“文明:当代生活启示录”。及瑞士摄影基金会的“Unfamiliar Familiarities”和法国巴黎布朗利码头博物馆的“Photoquai 2015”,以及连州摄影博物馆的个展《苹果》,上海摄影艺术中心《摄寻千里:十见天日》,chi k11艺术空间《农场》等在内的多个国内外展览,并于2025年在成都A4美术馆举办大型个展《八仙过海》,张晓现工作生活于成都。
Born in 1981 in Yantai city, Shandong province, China, Zhang Xiao graduated from the Department of Architecture and Design at Yantai University in 2005. He was a photojournalist for Chongqing Morning Post. Zhang won the Robert Gardner Fellow in Photography of Harvard University in 2018. He won the Three Shadows Photography Award in 2010 with They series. He also received the second Hou Dengke Documentary Photography Award in 2009, The Photography Talent Award (France) in 2010 and the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie in 2011 with his Coastline series. Zhang has participated in several solo and group exhibitions, including “Shehuo”, Harvard University Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, “ The World in 2015 ”, “Civilization: The Way We Live Now”( Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China), “ Unfamiliar Familiarities ” , ( Fotostiftung Schweiz ,Winterthur, Switzerland), “ Photoquai ”, ( Quai Branly Museum,Paris,France ), and “ Apple ”, ( Lianzhou Photography Museum, Guangdong, China), “ Social Geography: Ten Journeys with a Camera , (Shanghai Centre of Photography ,Shanghai , China) , “The Farm”, (chi k11 Art Space, Shenyang, China), etc. In 2025, a large-scale solo exhibition "The Mortal Immortals" was held at Chengdu A4 Art Museum. Zhang currently lives and works in Chengdu city, Sichuan province, China.
张胜佳 Zhang Shengjia
张胜佳(1997,深圳),英国中央圣马丁艺术学院纯艺术硕士,获Mona Hatoum奖学金与Turing Scheme资助,并取得院长奖,作品被圣马丁博物馆永久收藏。本科毕业于深圳大学室内设计专业。他的创作多涉及影像、装置与人类学研究,多通过搜集相关边缘性档案资料,调查探讨日常器物、观念背后的次要社会历史与跨国文化流动。
曾入围DOK Leipzig莱比锡国际纪录片影展最佳纪录短片银鸽奖(德国,2024)、CIRFA艺术影像奖(意大利,2024),UCCA“燃冉”青年艺术家奖项(中国,2024),伦敦Lewisham Arthouse青年艺术家奖项(英国,2024)等。并入选荷兰科学影展(荷兰,2025),海上世界文化艺术中心(中国,2024),北京国际短片联展(中国,2023),伦敦设计节(英国,2022),LUX(英国,2022),法国圣埃蒂安双年展(法国,2019),深港城市建筑双年展(中国,2019)等。
Shengjia Zhang (b.1997, Shenzhen) is a multimedia artist and filmmaker from Guangdong, China. He holds an MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins (UK), where he received the Dean’s Award as well as support from the Mona Hatoum Bursary and the Turing Scheme. His work is now part of the permanent collection of the Central Saint Martins Museum. He completed his undergraduate studies in Interior Architecture at Shenzhen University. Inspired by cultural anthropology, his practice delves into minor social histories and cultural hybridity, intertwined with everyday objects and concepts, through collecting and investigating relevant marginal archives.
Zhang was nominated for the Silver Dove Award at DOK Leipzig (Germany, 2024), the CIRFA Award for Bridging East and West (Italy, 2024), the Young Artist Prize at UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (China, 2024), and graduate award at Lewisham Arthouse (UK, 2024). His work has been also presented at InScience Film Festival (Netherlands, 2025), SWCAC Art Center (China, 2024), Beijing International Short Film Festival (China, 2023), London Design Week (UK, 2022), LUX (UK, 2022), Biennale Internationale de Design Saint-Étienne (France, 2019), and the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture (China/Hong Kong, 2019). He has undertaken residencies at LL Interspace (Germany, 2024) and Arbre Space (China, 2023).

A4 Residency Art Center is an interdisciplinary and open collaboration platform that takes residency as its method and perspective. We aim to explore the integration of diverse creative resources among communities, cities, and international partners, by tapping into local culture and international cooperation opportunities.
Sharing knowledge and experience related to residency programs, it connects various groups of values and aspirations that are community-driven. With the aim of promoting communication and interaction among interdisciplinary creatives, the platform is set against the backdrop of emerging cultural forms and structures in urban areas, inspiring and helping residents, participants, and supporters to efficiently and innovatively "use" the space and support provided by the platform. Given the diversity of scenarios covered by the term "residency," which includes tools, methods, resources, and more, it creates exchanges and links between different professional resources for participants, including but not limited to artists, scientists, writers, poets, scholars, musicians, architects, designers, brand managers, and other creators and explorers with different identities and backgrounds, promoting their communication and dialogue with communities, cities, and the world.

A RE-CONNECT是2023年A4国际驻留艺术中心更新后的一个系列项目,主要包含创作者基于在地的走访、交流与思考后而进行的各类日常性活动,它可能是分享会、讲座、表演、作品展示等等形式。它是流动的、点状的,分散在社区与城市的各个空间,其中的内容来源于驻留日常中的自然流露与正在发生。在被连接的参与、分享与讨论中,每个人都是共创者。
A RE-CONNECT is a series of projects updated by the A4 Residency Art Center in 2023. It mainly includes various daily activities carried out by creators based on local visits, exchanges and reflections. It may take the forms of sharing sessions, lectures, performances, work exhibitions, etc. It is fluid and point-like, scattered throughout various Spaces of the community and the city, and its content originates from the natural outflows and ongoing events in the daily life. In the connected participation, sharing and discussion, everyone is a co-creator.
