[Foreword]

After a long journey through the world, one must eventually return to a room.

At the foot of Guanyin Mountain, inside the studio: a single stick of incense, a cup of clear tea. Collapsed time, fiction after human extinction, agents in the age of algorithms, the ruins of images, and the ghosts of archives… Outside, the world is full of wind and noise. Here, nothing can be heard.

Before the canvas is opened, all things remain indistinct. A thought first arises, suspended before it falls. As thoughts multiply, they become entangled with success and failure, choice and renunciation, form, colour, and gain or loss. In  Guangyi SUN’s understanding, daily creation resembles a silent game: the opponent does not stand outside the painting, but within the mind. Creation is his daily practice. Through each brushstroke, he recognises his thoughts; through repeated labour, he learns to let go.

Labour originally belongs to the hand. It concerns technique, experience, physical strength, and the repetition of day after day. When a person begins to observe himself through labour, and begins to pour external observation, inner insight, and slow cultivation into the image, labour moves beyond itself. The work of the hand gradually becomes a discipline of the heart; the making on the canvas gradually becomes the becoming of the artist. The game slowly appears within this labour. It comes from the freedom born when labour is illuminated by thought. Each stroke, covering, pause, and restart feels like a test; each establishment and shift of rules feels like a small act of breaking through. Within this process, Guangyi trains his hand and also trains his heart. He turns painting into a daily practice, and turns daily practice into a game.

This exhibition presents a series of works created by Guangyi SUN over the past two years. Rooted spiritually in Eastern aesthetics, the series embeds materials such as rice paper, mineral pigments, and acrylic sheets into the texture of the canvas. It carries both the breathing quality of ink and the material presence of mixed media. The images preserve the vivid resonance of Eastern artistic aesthetics while absorbing the chromatic tension of Western Abstract Expressionism. Through the dialogue between materials, Sun explores the translation of visual language. For Guangyi, each act of translation is a game: materials are translated into pictorial texture, observation is translated into pictorial structure, and daily thought enters the work through repeated acts of arrangement.

In The Game of Heart and Hand in Accord, we invite you to enter Guangyi SUN’s creative archive and experience the slowly unfolding relationship between material, image, and thought. The game here is hidden in each pause and return, and in Guangyi’s repeated daily encounter with himself. It carries the skill of the hand and the loosening of the heart; it allows labour to give rise to freedom, and allows creation to become a way of observing oneself.

Nobody Gallery

The German-born Ashkenazi Jewish philosopher, cultural critic, and essayist Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) noted in his final work Theses on the Philosophy of History:" Commemorating the nameless is more difficult than commemorating the renowned. The construction of history is dedicated to the memory of the nameless." This statement reminds us that history is shaped more by the contributions of the unknown than by the celebrated figures alone. The nameless often embody an unseen yet vital presence—those whose efforts and creations, though unrecorded by history, are indispensable. To recognize and respect the nameless is to embrace a value system that transcends fame and labels. It is precisely because their significance is obscured by the tides of history that commemorating the nameless is so challenging. Yet the true construction of history ultimately honors their memory. At Nobody Gallery, we hold firmly to the belief that "nobody is somebody." The meaning of art should not be dictated by fame, but rather by its ability to resonate with the human heart. We are dedicated to discovering and supporting “yet-to-be-recognized” artists, breaking barriers within the art ecosystem, and fostering a more inclusive and diverse art world. Whether you are an established artist or a budding creator, if your work holds the power to move hearts, we are here to support you. At Nobody Gallery, we blur the lines between art and life, believing that every "nobody" carries the potential to become "somebody" for art belongs to everyone. Our philosophy of "nobody is somebody" represents a commitment to the diversity and inclusivity of the art world. We aim to give more talented artists the visibility they deserve, promoting a healthier and more open art market. In this process, collectors can enjoy the richness of engaging with diverse artistic expressions. Through our platform, we introduce society and collectors to extraordinary artists who may yet be undiscovered, driving the art world toward a more open and dynamic future—where the possibilities of art transcend fame itself. Regardless of background or accolades, we focus on the art itself. At Nobody Gallery, art is born for everyone, and life is art. If your work moves hearts, we will invest the resources to support you. We are continuously seeking passionate artists—join us in shaping a more inclusive and boundless art community.
