Red Gate Gallery is honored to present Heartbeat on the Edge  - 10 Songzhuang Artists, opening on May 10. Curated by Zhang Weilin, the exhibition highlights ten artists who migrated and settled in Songzhuang from outside Beijing, exploring their diverse artistic outlooks and personal creative expressions.

红门画廊荣幸呈现群展《边缘的中心 - 10 位宋庄艺术家》(Heartbeat on the Edge  - 10 Songzhuang Artists), 5 月 10 日开幕。展览由张惟粼担任策展人,聚焦 10 位异地移居北京宋庄创作与生活的艺术家,探讨创作者们多样的艺术面貌与个人表达。

Foreword 展览前言

Geography often places us on the periphery, but the spirit often chooses its own center. In the nineteenth century, the village of Barbizon on the outskirts of Paris embraced Rousseau and Millet, who had grown weary of industrializing urban life. There, in what was mockingly called a place of "corn boiling and dirty bed sheets," the most thunderous cries of realist art emerged, temporarily shifting the center of the art world away from the salons along the Seine. History has a way of repeating itself. In contemporary China, the most concrete embodiment of this dialectic—the deconstruction and reconstruction of the "center" by the "edge"—is a place called Songzhuang.

More than thirty years ago, when the pioneers of the Yuanmingyuan Artist Village migrated north like migratory birds to this quiet, river-wrapped land, a subtle dialectic of "drift" and "gathering" quietly took effect. Beginning in 1994, when Fang Lijun, Yue Minjun, and other early artists settled in Xiaobao Village, Songzhuang ceased to be just another coordinate on an administrative map and became a spiritual phenomenon. It was a enclave beyond the mainstream gaze, an "outlaw" territory—what Deleuze and Guattari might call a "war machine" against the state apparatus. Yet it was precisely this geographical marginality that gave Songzhuang its unique power: distance from the center generated a centrifugal force of thought, allowing art to shed the constraints of capital and power and to grow wildly on free soil.

Today, when we speak of "the center on the edge," we refer not only to the geographical character of the Songzhuang art district but also to a deeper aesthetic-anthropological declaration. Those margins long obscured by central discourse possess a remarkable energy to disrupt established distributions of the sensible. Standing among more than 7,000 restless souls and over 5,000 studios in what has become the world's largest artist community, we realize that the true center has never possessed fixed coordinates. It appears wherever courage breaks the rules.

This exhibition casts a spotlight on ten stylistically diverse young artists. They are the most vital cells in Songzhuang's sprawling ecological system. Unlike the previous generation, which struggled within grand narratives, these artists belong to a generation born global. Their vision transcends East-West geographical divides, yet their expression returns to a deeply individual microcosm.

边缘的中心

——写给宋庄的青年艺术家们

地理上的边缘,往往孕育着精神上的中心。正如十九世纪巴黎郊外的巴比松村,接纳了厌倦城市工业化的卢梭、米勒,在那个被讽刺为“煮老玉米、洗脏床单”的边陲之地,竟发出了现实主义艺术最震耳发聩的呐喊,让世界艺术的中心暂时偏离了塞纳河畔的沙龙。历史总是惊人的相似,这种“边缘”对“中心”的祛魅与重构,在当代中国,有一个最具象的注脚——宋庄。

三十多年前,当圆明园画家村的那批拓荒者像候鸟一样北迁至这片潮白河与温榆河环绕的宁静村落时,一种关于“游离”与“凝聚”的辩证法便悄然生效。从1994年方力钧、岳敏君等首批艺术家入驻小堡村开始,这里便不再是行政地图上的一个普通坐标,而演变成了一种精神现象。它曾是主流视野之外的一片“飞地”,是体制外的“江湖”,是德勒兹笔下那个对抗“国家装置”的“战争机器”。然而,正是这种物理距离的“边缘性”,赋予了宋庄一种独特的魔力——空间的距离产生了思想的离心力,让艺术得以摆脱资本与权力的裹挟,在自由的土地上野蛮生长。

今天我们谈论“边缘的中心”,不仅是对宋庄艺术区地缘特征的描述,更是一种深层次的审美人类学宣言。正如马克思主义审美人类学所揭示的,那些长期被遮蔽在中心话语之外的“边缘”,恰恰拥有扰动既定感性分配秩序的巨大能量。当我们置身于这个全球规模最大的艺术家聚集区,面对这7000多个跳动的灵魂和5000多间工作室,我们发现,真正的中心从未有过固定的经纬度,它存在于每一次打破常规的勇气之中。

在这个展览中,我试图将聚光灯打向十位风格迥异的青年艺术家。他们是宋庄庞杂生态系中最具活力的细胞。与上一代在宏大叙事中挣扎的艺术家不同,他们是“天生全球化”的一代,视野跨越了东西方的地理界限,但在表达上,却回归到了极其个体化的“微观宇宙”。

About the Curator 关于策展人

Zhang Weilin is an international art dealer, curator, and cultural industry investor. Having lived extensively in Canada, France, and the United Kingdom, he brings a cross-cultural perspective and a professional background in finance to the art world. Since 2022, he has crossed over into contemporary art, focusing on discovering, supporting, and promoting the community of young artists in Songzhuang.

张惟粼,国际艺术代理、策展人、文化产业投资人。曾长期生活于加拿大、法国、英国,具备跨文化视野与专业金融背景。自2022年起跨界进入当代艺术领域,专注于发掘、支持与推广宋庄的青年艺术家群体。
