From 16 to 26 April, XJTLU Industrial Design proudly presented two pioneering student projects at the “INTERDEPENDENCE: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE” exhibition.
"INTERDEPENDENCE: Past, Present, Future" investigates how design acts as a bridge between memory and vision. By displaying student work alongside archived projects from CASVA, the exhibition highlights the continuity of design evolution and its power to shape a sustainable, inclusive future.
Hosted by the Politecnico di Milano Design System (School of Design, Department of Design, and POLI.design), this year’s edition marked the third consecutive year of the INTERDEPENDENCE series. The 2026 theme explored the intricate relationship between design and the temporal dimension, staged across the prestigious Fabbrica del Vapore and SaloneSatellite venues. XJTLU joined 50 of the world’s leading design schools to showcase how creative thinking can reconcile heritage with foresight.
The two XJTLU exhibits addressed critical contemporary challenges, ranging from physical accessibility in cultural spaces to the psychological nuances of our digital afterlife.

“Silk Road Discovery Box” was developed in the "Design for Social Innovation" (IND403) module by Hanwei Ding, Zhiming Mao, Kefan Shi, and Luka Leon Vlahovic, with Emanuela Corti as the module leader.
This project partnered with the Suzhou Silk Museum and Gusu Special Education School to address China's policy-practice gap in museum inclusion. Using Participatory Action Research and Participatory Design, students, educators, and the disability community co-created multisensory, cognitively inclusive experiences.
The project aimed to transform museums into dynamic, inclusive spaces by engaging diverse sensory needs, positioning museums as agents of social change, providing ethical design experience, and producing scalable, inclusive models for Chinese cultural institutions. Silk Road Discovery Box, is an Interactive Exhibit Design for Children supporting Learning and Recreational Activities for Kids of All Abilities at the Suzhou Silk Museum.

“Afterverse: Digital Legacy Memorial” is a Master’s Thesis Project by Ke Meng, supervised by Emanuela Corti.
In the 21st century, digital life generates a complex personal legacy - social media, photos, emails - that endures beyond death. Traditional practices cannot capture this, while existing digital tools remain fragmented and passive. Meanwhile, grief psychology has evolved: the "Continuing Bonds" paradigm shows that healing often involves maintaining an ongoing relationship with the deceased. Digitally-native generations are culturally ready to extend identity and ritual into virtual spaces. Afterverse addresses this gap through a holistic service ecosystem that dignifies digital legacy. Its core innovation synthesizes technology, psychology, and ritual into a coherent, user-centered experience.

The exhibition opening, held on April 16 at Fabbrica del Vapore, served as a vibrant hub for international academic exchange. XJTLU’s participation was supported on-site by students Rosa Zerella, Laura Amigoni, and Luka Leon Vlahovic.
In addition to the student showcases, the event featured a rich program of talks and workshops, curated in collaboration with CASVA (Centre for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts) and supported by Microsoft. These sessions provided XJTLU students the opportunity to engage with industry leaders and peers from around the world, discussing how design can navigate the tensions between conservation and innovation.
