Preface to the Exhibition "Mystical Illusion: Symbiosis of Carbon and Silicon"
He Hua
When the visual construction of surrealism and the spiritual metaphor of symbolism engage in cross-cultural dialogue with the poetic philosophy embodied in Eastern brushwork; when the alienated poetry contained in Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil resonates ideologically with the contemporary proposition of the symbiosis of carbon-based life and silicon-based machines, artist Wang Kai takes paper-based mixed media as his creative medium, constructing a unique artistic and philosophical field belonging to the contemporary context within the dimensions of his works. As an artist who has long been deeply engaged in mixed media art practice, Wang Kai takes surreal visual language as the framework of expression and the philosophical connotation of ancient Eastern brushwork as the spiritual core. In his series of works such as Eternal Youth Realm, Silicon Zone, and Metaphors of Transition Pages, he systematically disassembles the inherent boundaries between life and machines, in-depth explores the core issues of civilizational evolution and the essence of existence, and guides the audience to embark on an artistic and philosophical journey about the symbiosis of carbon and silicon, as well as the interpenetration of the virtual and the real, through a progressive visual experience and thinking process.
Looking at his works, a surreal nameless space unfolds before the audience’s eyes immediately. The biological forms wrapped in gears and the imagery of human bodies with beast heads break the logical order of the real world, outlining a spiritual landscape that is both absurd and symbolic. Eternal Youth Realm - 1 deeply understands the way to create Boschian visual tension, deconstructing traditional life forms with grotesque and intricate images, and forming an organic symbiotic visual relationship between the natural texture of growing plants and the industrial texture of mechanical engagement; Delusion Erosion seems to draw on the classic visual imagery of the Tower of Babel and the scenes of hell in Botticelli’s The Divine Comedy, profoundly interpreting the absurd nature of the construction and dissolution of human civilization; White Night returns to the spiritual core of symbolism, laying out hazy and mysterious light and shadow to touch the hidden truth deep in human nature and the essence of the world. Particularly noteworthy is that in the Eternal Youth Realm series, the imagery of mountain and sea monsters transformed by the integration of flowers, plants and creatures combines the ethereal artistic conception of Eastern monster aesthetics with the characteristics of Western surrealist expression, endowing the fantasy visual field with the possibility of cross-cultural spiritual resonance.
In-depth analysis of the details of the works reveals the cultural code of Eastern brushwork gradually in the texture of the pictures. Those cold gear symbols that seem to carry industrial rationality, upon careful appreciation, are actually the contemporary transformation of classic imagery such as mountain rocks and gnarled ancient trees in traditional Chinese painting. The rendering and outlining techniques of traditional brushwork endow the mechanical lines with the unique warm charm and humanistic connotation of Eastern landscape painting. The Metaphors of Transition Pages series constructs a rich and profound system of spiritual metaphors through progressive visual narration. Within the constraints of regular dimensions, the artist creates multiple visual layers and interpretation dimensions through the texture creation and symbol reconstruction of paper-based mixed media. When the audience stares at the pictures, they will unconsciously fall into in-depth thinking about the boundary between reality and metaphor. He is responding to the spiritual predicament of contemporary people surrounded by information and technology with the philosophical speculation of traditional brushwork.
Wang Kai’s creation always contains the core contradiction between nothingness and complexity. The grand narrative themes such as civilizational evolution, life existence and cosmic order are consciously placed on a silicon-based visual substrate like a circuit board. This strong contrast between grand narrative and micro carrier forms a deep echo with the ideological connotation of Baudelaire’s The Flowers of Evil. Baudelaire broke the traditional aesthetic paradigm of the opposition between beauty and ugliness from a pioneering perspective, exploring the existence of poetry in the context of modern alienation; Wang Kai, on the other hand, integrates the unique "cold and hard" texture of silicon-based machines with the "warm and moist" charm contained in ink painting art, making the entangled forms of insect bodies, plants and gears in works such as Silicon Zone and Bifurcated Pendulum become visual metaphors for the symbiotic relationship between carbon-based life and silicon-based machines — the boundary between technology and life is gradually blurred, and silicon-based machine life has become an extension and supplement of human existence. Moreover, the poetic narration of human fate in Time and Its Labyrinth and Restart Paradise 1, as well as the philosophical inquiry into the nihilistic essence of life inAll Things Have No Substance, further push the contemporary thinking on the symbiosis of carbon and silicon towards the ultimate exploration of the essence of existence.
A single sheet of paper condenses all phenomena, and a single brushstroke hides profound thoughts. With paper-based mixed media as a cross-cultural and cross-era bridge of dialogue, Wang Kai enables Western modern art trends and ancient Eastern philosophical connotations to form effective dialogue in the contemporary proposition of the symbiosis of carbon and silicon, transforming the surreal visual illusion into an important carrier for thinking about the essence of life and responding to the spirit of the times. This exhibition aims to invite the audience to step into this mystical illusion, touch the pulse of the era of carbon-silicon symbiosis, explore the philosophical answers to existence and nothingness, and feel the ideological depth and aesthetic value contained in contemporary mixed media art through the two-way interaction of gazing and thinking.
