Ruins · Forms

— Fan Jieying Solo Exhibition

Text by Sun Fei

Fan Jieying’s paintings unfold gently before us in a deep, somber realm of ink. The vast, almost suffocating black ink shrouds the work like nightfall, subduing all noisy appearances, leaving only a thread or flicker of white light to speak for silence. Its visual impact goes far beyond ordinary aesthetic experience, compelling viewers to rethink the very essence of painting.

What interests me is not the formal tension on the surface, but the spiritual pursuit hidden beneath those heavy layers of ink—a contemporary allegory of “formlessness” and “ruins.”

What is formlessness? As the Diamond Sutra teaches: “All forms are illusory.” Such is precisely the nature of Fan Jieying’s brushwork. His works transcend the “imagistic” aesthetics of traditional ink painting, entering a free realm of unforced, personal expression. This formlessness is both his deconstruction of appearances and his way of confronting the truth of life directly. He paints in an expressive language, drawing from personal experience and engaging sociological perspectives, drawing viewers into his emotional world to search for traces of life within shadow.

“Ruins,” meanwhile, are where Fan Jieying’s spirit resides. Reinterpreting scenes from grotto murals, his works reconstruct an expressive space charged with mystery and tension, laying bare the landscape of an age against a sharp modern context, prompting constant reflection between complexity and simplicity, surface and essence. This “ruin” is at once a physical space, a psychological field, and a sediment of the spirit.

Fan Jieying’s creations capture the rhythm and spiritual condition of our time. As a contemporary intellectual bearing cultural responsibility, he maintains a sober distance from this noisy world in an almost martyr-like stance, opening up a new path for contemporary ink art unlike any before.

“Ruins · Forms” is more than an exhibition of paintings; it is an act of spiritual archaeology. Through his solemn, powerful ink, we witness a contemporary ink painter’s persistence and reconstruction upon spiritual ruins. This is Fan Jieying’s most precious revelation to us.
