Artist:

Alimjan Adil

Exhibition Date:

The Red Cloth

Oil on Canvas,160×85cm,2025

Gaotai Gallery is pleased to present Night, a solo exhibition by artist Alimjan Adil. The exhibition brings together a selection of the artist’s recent paintings, using “night” as a point of entry into his pictorial world and unfolding his observations of everyday life, and contemporary visual experience.

The works in the exhibition reveal a pattern logic that may be described as “bazaar aesthetics.” Here, the bazaar is not merely a commercial space, but also a mode of perception that continues to shape everyday life: things are densely arranged, carefully ordered, and brightly lit; abundance emerges through density, while dignity is constructed through color and luminosity. This pattern also permeates the organization of fashion, objects, and urban space: rows of necklace displays and gold accessories in jewelry shops, clothing store windows illuminated against the night, and neatly arranged pomegranates spread across market stalls with cloth coverings all come together in his paintings to form a naturally juxtaposed everyday landscape.

This visual logic further permeates Arimjan's painterly language: high-keyed colors reflect and amplify one another, while loose, lively brushwork and vivid pigment preserve the texture, warmth, and tactility of things. The deep red of pomegranates, the burgundy of velvet, the bright pink of nail polish; the pure gold of jewelry stores, the warm gold on skin, the matte gold of embroidered trim — layered against each other, these colors continually heighten the luminosity of the picture surface, giving the work a quality that seems to glow from within.

For Arimjan Adil, painting is above all a direct response to immediate sensation. The world he receives comes not only through the eyes, but through the body: the scorching heat of a copper plate, the juiciness of pomegranate seeds, the warmth lingering in sun-dried fabric, the faint burning glow of metal jewelry under lamplight — all of it translated onto canvas as color and temperature more vivid, more intense than reality itself. His paintings therefore do not rest at representation; rather, they transform these sensations into color, brushwork, and light that exceed what the eye alone can perceive — constituting on the canvas a reality that can be felt directly, one that is equal in weight to life itself. What Night presents, then, is a world still luminous, still flowing, and still being joyfully lived.

The exhibition opens on April 24 and runs through June 30, and we warmly welcome you to visit Alimjan's brilliant works in Gaotai.

About Artist

Born in 1997 in Xinjiang, Alimjan Adil graduated from the Second Studio of the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and currently lives and works in Urumqi.

His practice centers on the everyday life and landscape of Xinjiang. Rooted in realist painting while incorporating a strong ornamental sensibility, his work has developed into a highly distinctive visual language. Alimjan is particularly attentive to the visual experience produced through the intersection of folk traditions and contemporary life. Drawing on details from people, street scenes, and urban spaces, he constructs rhythmically charged compositions through color, materiality, and pictorial structure. Geometric motifs derived from Xinjiang’s traditional decorative arts often appear in his paintings, preserving a strong regional visual character while also reflecting an ongoing engagement with contemporary painting language.
