Duoscapes
Artist: Grapebattleships, MSR FCJ
2026.4.18 - 2026.5.31

(The true beauty of an artwork resides in the tension between excess and restraint.)

Double Double Gallery is pleased to present Duoscapes, a group exhibition bringing together two artist duos: MSR FCJ (UK) and Grapebattleships (China). Working primarily in collaborative painting, both pairs investigate the dynamic interplay between dual authorship, exploring tension, collision and the shared gravity that exists between two entities.
Through shared making, both partnerships have developed unique working systems that reveal simultaneous tensions. Each duo engages with reactivity, but from differing perspectives. MSR FCJ embrace a spontaneous and intuitive process, working in a constant push-and-pull dynamic where opposing inputs drive a reactive, unplanned exchange of mark marking. In contrast, Grapebattleships adopt a more deliberate approach, beginning with detailed discussions of content and concept before gradually constructing compositions. Their works often feature juxtaposed elements, with reactivity emerging through paired imagery.
The notion of a “shared gravity” resonates throughout the exhibition, underpinning both process and form. Grapebattleships engage explicitly with ideas of duality and “double vision,” creating visual dialogues between paired elements. MSR FCJ, meanwhile, approach this strange gravity through a more personal sensibility, by depicting the intangible currents that flow between space that are in a constant battle with one and other.
Together, MSR FCJ and Grapebattleships present two distinct bodies of work that examine the tension and cosmic energy inherent in duality—both in collaboration and imagery. Duoscapes, aptly held at Double Double Gallery, captures the dynamic interplay between two practices, two processes, and two ways of seeing.
In the works of MSR FCJ, figurative traces often emerge subtly beneath an abstract language. Both artists, with backgrounds in illustration and drawing within the self-publishing, comic, and zine scenes, frequently incorporate experimental, personal, cartoon-like figures and motifs into their paintings. Their scribbled lines of paint—reminiscent of biro pens or coloured pencils—evoke doodles one might find in a back pocket. In collaboration, they engage in a deliberate and often brutal exchange of image-making, repeatedly layering over one and other, destroying and obscuring each others previous marks, emphasising the traces left behind, and allowing for spontaneous chance and discovery. Themes of mutation and transformation run strong through the cutting, collaging, sewing, or ‘Frankensteining’ images, or through the interruption of fluid lines with dense pools of colour, their work allows strange, unfamiliar characters and scenes to emerge organically.
MSR FCJ’s paintings demonstrate an ongoing exploration of collaborative visual language. Through their experimental approach, figures, objects, and scenes gradually reveal themselves, hinting at personal narratives and meanings within complex, layered compositions.
Grapebattleships based in Berlin, consist of an artist and designer. Their collaboration merges distinct life experience and perspectives within an single image. They engage in thorough and detailed discussions before painting, starting from content and concept, and gradually forming clear compositions through repeated communication. Their works cover a wide range of themes, often presented in humorous and absurd vignette-like forms, creating an apparently nonsensical surface. Beneath this light narrative lies a reflection on social reality, producing a dramatic tension akin to that in Waiting for Godot, where meaning emerges through absurdity. Their practice often originates from the dislocation of perspectives shaped by differences between Eastern and Western worldviews and values, unfolding through a dialectical mode of thinking.
Formally, their paintings often exhibit strong symmetrical structures and intertextual relationships. Images within the compositions echo and complement each other, extending narratives while establishing a balance between density and openness. Their multicultural lived experience enables them to begin from everyday details, mapping broader social structures and worldviews through micro-narratives.
This exhibition is just as Georges Bataille wrote in Literature and Evil: “The true beauty of an artwork resides in the tension between excess and restraint.”

About the Artist

Grapebattleships

MSR FCJ
