Cao Shu (b. 1987) lives and works in Hangzhou. His practice delves into historically grounded scientific speculation and a personalized archaeology of technology. Through a diverse array of media—from 3D-rendered animations and video game installations to multi-channel video works and sculptures—he constructs narrative labyrinths that interweave the real and the virtual together, forging digital “archaeological sites of memory.” In recent years, his practice has expanded to explore themes including socialist science fiction, encryption technology, and the collective unconscious, offering a critical reflection on how technology reshapes the inner landscapes of the human psyche.
Cao Shu has been awarded the 2022 OCAT x KADIST Young Media Artist Award, the 2021 Shanghai Photo Fair Exposure Award, and the 2017 BISFF Art Exploration Award. He was also shortlisted for the Ducato Prize 2025 (Italy) and the inaugural E.A.T. PRIZE 2024. His works have been presented in institutional exhibitions at venues such as Kunsthaus Baselland (Basel), Macao Museum of Art, White Rabbit Gallery (Sydney), Matadero Madrid, M+ Museum (Hong Kong), UCCA Dune Museum, Power Station of Art (Shanghai), Asia Society Hong Kong Center, BY ART MATTERS, OCAT Shanghai, National Museum of China, and Sleep Center (New York). He has held solo exhibitions at the HOW Art Museum (Shanghai), Zhejiang Art Museum, Imagokinectics by BY ART MATTERS (Hangzhou), Muffatwerk (Munich), and Yokohama Koza Studio (Koganecho).
Recent residencies include KADIST (San Francisco, 2024), Muffatwerk (Munich, 2023), Koganecho Bazaar (Yokohama, 2019), and Atelier Mondial (Basel, 2017). Cao Shu’s firm works have also been selected for the main competition sections of international film festivals, including DOK Leipzig, Annecy International Animated Film Festival, DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, Guanajuato International Film Festival, Milan Film Festival, Ottawa International Animation Festival, and International Short Film Festival Hannover.
Cao Shu’s works are held in the permanent collections of KADIST, White Rabbit Gallery, BY ART MATTERS, Zhejiang Art Museum, HOW Art Museum, and Yaoshan Art Foundation, among others.
