A Spring That Never Fades
By Zhang Jing
I was born in a northern city where the four seasons are sharply defined. In my memory, each winter people lean on a kind of quiet romanticism — projecting themselves forward, imagining the arrival of spring, as if belief alone could make it inevitable.
And then spring does arrive.Brief. Gentle. Impossible to hold.
In this exhibition, Four Seasons Like Spring becomes an attempt at holding—one that is destined to fail.
I try, in a mental and emotional sense, to keep someone from slipping away. To hold her within a moment untouched by further aging.
In this context, “spring” is no longer a season, but a desire — so intense it almost becomes painful.
“Near home, one feels a deeper fear, and dares not ask the traveler.”
This line speaks to the hesitation of a returning soul, and mirrors my own state when facing my mother’s irreversible aging — a simultaneous longing for closeness, and a fear of what that closeness might reveal. The closer I move, the quieter I become.
The more real it feels, the less I am able to speak. Four Seasons Like Springis an honest fiction. I know it cannot hold, and yet I need it to exist. This time, I am no longer trying to explain. I am simply moving closer — closer to a process that is already unfolding, and cannot be stopped.

Glass becomes a central material in this body of work, not because of its beauty, but because of its unreliability.
It resembles so much of what we depend on: transparent, smooth, whole—almost perfectly composed.
And yet, all of this rests upon extreme fragility. It does not require force. Only the slightest deviation. And it breaks.
The glass thorns growing along the branches are among the most direct — and most honest — elements in these works.
They are not merely about fragility. They reflect a condition we inhabit: a structure that both protects and harms.
Thorns are meant for defense. Yet when they become sharp enough, they often wound the very body they grow from. Much like the boundaries we construct — our defenses, our distances, our ways of holding the world at bay — these mechanisms protect us from collapse, while also preventing true closeness.
So we protect ourselves, and at the same time, we are wounded. We strive for wholeness, even as we continue to fracture. The branches are still growing. But this is no longer natural growth.
They carry weight, intrusion, and a structure of pain that cannot be removed. It is not an intense pain, but a persistent one. Like time itself.
This exhibition resists completeness. It moves instead toward a fractured condition —
like a wound that has not yet healed, like a silence deliberately preserved, like a question that cannot be answered.
Because what matters most often resists being shaped into a clear narrative. If this work is about anything, it is not about spring. It is about the full range of human responses when faced with inevitable loss: illusion, defense, avoidance, approach, and— love that remains unfinished.
Here, “spring” becomes a temporary fiction. And glass reminds us: even a fiction can exist with precision —
with beauty,
with wholeness,with protection.
And at the same time —
it is always readyto enter the body.
