前言

\Preface

新世纪以来,中国当代水墨的探索路径较之前发生了一定的转变。若将世纪初的创作比作一条汇入外部海洋的河流,那么近二十年的中国当代水墨实践,我觉得则更像一次向着源头的回溯。这一过程,或可称之为“墨在东方”,本次展览亦因此得名。

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the trajectory of Chinese contemporary ink art has undergone a notable transformation.If the artistic explorations at the dawn of the century can be seen as a river flowing outward toward the open sea, then the practices of the past two decades more closely resemble a journey tracing back to the source. This process might well be described as "Where Ink Begins",hence the title of this exhibition. It is precisely this "beginning" that we call the “East.”

此处所谓“东方”,并非地理疆域,而是文化精神的故土。如果说20世纪80年代中期至世纪末,艺术家们主要还是积极借鉴西方现代艺术的形式与观念,试图为水墨开辟新的疆域。那么回望新世纪以来这20年的水墨现场,一种更为沉静、内省的趋向日益清晰。我们看到,越来越多的创作者不再满足于表面的融合或观念的移植,而是将目光重新投向中国文化的思想深处。他们从笔、墨、纸、水的关系中,从山水、花鸟的美学意境里,从书法书写的气韵节奏内,重新体认和发掘水墨作为独特语言的本体价值。这种回归,是对文化根脉的自觉叩问。

The "East" invoked here is not a geographical concept, but rather the spiritual homeland of a culture. From the mid-1980s through the end of the century, artists primarily drew upon Western modern art, both in form and concept, to chart new territories for ink. Looking back at the ink art scene over the past two decades, however, reveals an increasingly pronounced shift toward quiet introspection. We see a growing number of artists no longer content with surface-level synthesis or the transplantation of ideas. Instead, they are turning their gaze inward, toward the deeper currents of Chinese cultural thought. Through the dynamic relationship between brush, ink, paper, and water; through the aesthetic realms of landscape and bird-and-flower painting; and through the rhythmic resonance of calligraphic gesture, they are rediscovering and reexamining the ontological value of ink as a distinct artistic language. This turn represents a conscious reckoning with cultural roots.

更为可贵的是,这种回归并非避世,亦非重复早已式微的陈旧形式,而是艺术家们以重新淬炼过的语言,真诚面对当下的生活现实,重返自身的理论体系和图像传统,并将都市的景观、日常的碎片、个体的心绪、时代的变迁等当代人的经验自然而然地纳入水墨的叙事框架。墨色因而承载了当代人的温度与思考,古老的绘画语言,由此获得了讲述今天中国故事的新的能力。

What is particularly significant is that this return does not signify a retreat from the world, nor is it a mere revival of long-declining traditional forms. Rather, it represents artists, armed with a newly refined visual language, engaging sincerely with the realities of contemporary life. They are reconnecting with their own theoretical frameworks and pictorial traditions, while seamlessly weaving into the narrative fabric of ink art the experiences of today, including the urban landscape, fragments of daily life, individual sentiments, and the transformations of our time. Thus, the ink itself becomes imbued with the sensibilities and reflections of the contemporary individual. In this way, an ancient artistic medium acquires a renewed capacity to tell the stories of China today.

“墨在东方——当代水墨艺术展”为中国美术家协会“青年伙伴计划”之“新时代青年美术人才培养项目——策展100”入选项目。策展人游江以深圳美术馆馆藏作品与特邀作品为依托,结合翔实的文献资料,通过一系列代表性作品,集中呈现了新世纪以来中国当代水墨的创作现场与艺术成果。同时,展览也展现了深圳美术馆在展览策划、学术论坛及藏品收藏等方面对中国当代水墨发展所起到的推动作用。本次展览亦是对深圳美术馆建馆50周年的一次学术献礼与致敬。

"Where Ink Begins: A Journey into Contemporary Ink Art" has been selected for the "New Era Young Curators: The 'Curatorial 100' Incubation Program," part of the China Artists Association's Youth Partnership Initiative. Curator You Jiang draws upon works from the Shenzhen Art Museum collection, complemented by specially commissioned pieces and extensive archival materials. Through a carefully curated selection of representative works, he presents a panoramic view of the creative landscape and artistic achievements of Chinese contemporary ink art since the turn of the new century. The exhibition also illuminates the pivotal role Shenzhen Art Museum has played in advancing contemporary ink art in China through its exhibitions, academic forums, and collecting practices. It also serves as an academic tribute marking the 50th anniversary of the museum's founding.

Introduction to the Curator

游江,艺术学博士,一级美术师,深圳大学喻继高中国工笔画研究院客座教授,中国美术批评家年会学术委员,广东省美术家协会会员,广东省中国画学会会员,深圳市美术家协会理事,深圳市青年美术家协会副会长,现供职于深圳美术馆。

You Jiang holds a Doctor of Arts degree and is a First-Class National Artist. He is a visiting professor at the Yu Jigao Chinese Painting Academy of Shenzhen University, an academic committee member of the China Art Critics Annual Conference, a member of the Guangdong Artists Association, a member of the Guangdong Chinese Painting Society, a director of the Shenzhen Artists Association, and a vice president of the Shenzhen Youth Artists Association. He currently works at Shenzhen Art Museum.
