The Museum of Iterative Gestures

EXHIBITION INTRO
This year, the Analogue Design Skills (ADS) module was redesigned to foster a playful, exploratory, and process-oriented approach to learning. The revised curriculum is structured around four interconnected thematic pillars. The first theme, Encountering the World: Making Your Mark, establishes an experimental drawing methodology by positioning ‘the mark' as the fundamental unit of two-dimensional design. Students investigate the agency of tools, surfaces, and gestural actions within mark-making practices. This foundation is extended into three dimensions through the second theme, Things Matter: Materials and Making. Here, students translate selected two-dimensional marks into three-dimensional structures using primary materials such as card, paper, and wire, thereby exploring material translation and form. At this juncture, the core notion of iteration becomes foregrounded; students are required to produce multiple works, each outcome actively building upon and responding to its predecessors, thereby reinforcing principles introduced in the preceding theme.
The third theme, Bodies of Knowledge: Body-as-Material Resource, challenges the perception of the body as merely a mechanical tool, introducing instead the concept of the body as an active and expressive material within the work itself. Through a body-as-sculpture activity, key objectives of performativity, embodiment, collaboration, and spatial awareness are developed via direct encounters with the campus environment. The concluding theme, Spaces is the Place: Walking, Noticing, Bundling, deepens this environmental engagement. Students undertake a self-directed walk, tasked with observing the reciprocal relationship between their interior world of thoughts and emotions and the exterior world of space and material forms. This heightened awareness is materialised through the curation of a ‘bundle’ of collected items, organised according to principles of variety, unity, and intentionality.
Assessment comprises two key artefacts. The first is a physical portfolio, conceptualised as a ‘Museum of ADS,’ in which students’ process materials and outcomes for each of those four themes are curated, labelled, and displayed within a cardboard tray. The second is a 20–25 page reflective journal containing documented processes, independent research, and extended critical reflection on the learning journey. The current exhibition celebrates those Museums of ADS with the inclusion of all 248 student submissions: ICI’s Open Museum has become a museum of museums.
