“ 息 装 ”

信息是什么?20世纪40年代,信息奠基人克劳德·埃尔伍德·香农(C.E.Shannon)给出了如下的定义:“信息是用来消除随机不确定性的东西”。从存在意义来说,信息是为了减少不确定性,而从实际传播来看,信息的传播过程充斥着大量的不确定性问题,其中一项就是信息冗余。即便是一个再简短的确定性信息,在传播运动中也会快速产生一系列的拓展与扩充,而现代通讯与传播技术的发展更是急剧地放大了这种冗余,带来了“信息爆炸”的困境。

对信息进行压缩,提取底层内容,是一种消解冗余的有效方法,也是周鱼鲜近两年创作里重要的表现形式。麦克卢汉的“媒介即讯息”是周鱼鲜在创意时信奉的理论,即媒介本身才是真正有意义的讯息。广告从业的经历也使得周鱼鲜对信息及其传播方式具有极高的敏感度,借由这种经验的切入,周鱼鲜从自身出发,挖掘自己身上所天然携带的原始确定性信息,如“是男的”、“是苏E”、“不吸烟”、“是硕士”等。以他自己所理解的传播思路,对这些信息内容进行批量复制粘贴,并将其覆盖到日常可见的实用性载体之上,借助被选择载体自有的功能属性,进一步对信息进行装扮与传播设置。

“一问三答”的第二答以“息装”为题,“息”代表的是“信息”,而“装”在这里引申出了“装饰(n.)”、“装扮(v.)”、“装修(v.)”“装腔作势(adj.)”之意。在现代社会中,信息已然成为了不同于衣物、饰品的第三种“着装”,人们习惯也善于用信息“装扮”自己在社会生活与他人眼中的形象。而展览,同样也是一个充满信息的地方,策展是将信息梳理并归类放置的一次“装修(v.)”。在周鱼鲜眼中,信息是一件件套在身上的服装,是装饰对象的词条,是装修空间的软装,有时也成为人们装腔作势、装点门面时的内容。展览将周鱼鲜一次次信息实验中的经验事件作为出发点,思考信息与人,与事物之间的位置与关系。以“息”入“装”,以“装”诉“息”,如同周鱼鲜的信息实验一般,在调侃荒诞中揶揄自嘲,在幽默诙谐里批判反思……

“Infornation-suit”

What is information? In the 1940s, information pioneer Claude Elwood Shannon defined information as "something used to eliminate random uncertainty." In terms of its existence, information is meant to reduce uncertainty, but in its actual propagation, the transmission of information is fraught with uncertainty, including the problem of information redundancy. Even a short, deterministic message can quickly generate a series of expansions and extensions during its transmission, and the rapid development of modern communication and transmission technologies has greatly amplified this redundancy, leading to the dilemma of "information explosion."

Compressing information and extracting underlying content is an effective method of eliminating redundancy, and it is an important form of expression in Zhou Yuxian's work in the past two years. McLuhan's "the medium is the message" is the theory that Zhou Yuxian adheres to when creating, which means that the medium itself is the truly meaningful message. His experience in advertising has also made him highly sensitive to information and its modes of transmission. Using this experience as a starting point, Zhou Yuxian explores the primitive deterministic information that he naturally carries with him, such as “Zhou is male," “Zhou is Su E," “Zhou does not smoke," “Zhou is master" etc. Using his own understanding of the transmission of information, he batch copies and pastes these information contents and overlays them onto practical carriers that are visible in daily life. By utilizing the functional attributes of the selected carriers, he further decorates and sets up the information for transmission.

The second answer of the "one question, three answers" is titled "Infornation-suit(Xi Zhuang-"息装" in Chinese). "Xi" represents "information," and "zhuang" here is extended to mean "decoration (n.)," "dress up (v.)," "decorate (v.)," and "pretentious (adj.)." In modern society, information has become a third form of "dress," distinct from clothing and accessories, and people are accustomed to using information to "dress up" their image in social life and in the eyes of others. Exhibitions are also places full of information, and curating is a kind of "decoration" where information is sorted and classified. In Zhou Yuxian's eyes, information is like clothing, a term used to decorate objects, soft furnishings used to decorate spaces, and sometimes the content used when people are pretentious and decorating their facade. The exhibition takes the experience events from Zhou Yuxian's information experiments as a starting point, reflecting on the position and relationship between information, people, and things. "Xi" enters "zhuang," and "zhuang" expresses "xi." Like Zhou Yuxian's information experiments, it ridicules self-deprecation in a playful and absurd manner, and critiques and reflects in a humorous and witty way.
