Vol.1

无界

BOUNDLESS

It is the encounter that crosses cultural frontiers.

It is the creativity that breaks through

the limits of imagination. It is the free flow that connects different worlds. It is the widening of perspectives and possibilities. It is a world without borders—and without edges.

In the scented universe created at Notes Shanghai,

we believe thatevery boundary is no longer an ending, but a path leading elsewhere—toward understanding, toward one another.

It is a new way for the world to move.

It is a new shape for the future.

Under the new theme Boundless,

we bring together fragrance influencers and perfumers, inviting them to reflect from their own

olfactory experiences and creative practiceson how scent transcends the boundaries of

style, identity, and imagination.

I spend much of the year crossing borders. As I hand over my passport to the border control, I think of roses picked in Bulgaria. They’re grown in the Rose Valley, distilled into oil, and shipped across the world, until they arrive on my wrist as perfume. I travel with documents. The rose travels through trade, tradition, and imagination. Its journey is quieter, but far more boundless.

We often imagine boundlessness as excess. More choice, more speed, more reach. In practice, it has less to do with expansion than with connection. Boundlessness begins when we stop dividing the world too neatly into disciplines, cultures, or identities, and allow ideas to circulate freely between them.

Scent offers a compelling example of this movement. It does not belong to a single language or geography. A raw material carries climate, labor, and memory, yet the moment it is smelled, it becomes intimate and personal. Perfume moves easily between chemistry and poetry, between craft and imagination. It connects the rational and the intuitive without demanding that we choose between them.

What draws me to fragrance is its refusal to remain fixed. A formula may begin as a technical exercise, but it rarely ends there. It absorbs references from art, literature, food, landscape, and ritual. It is shaped by what we have learned, where we have been, and what we remember. In this sense, perfume becomes a meeting point.

Boundlessness also describes how ideas move between people. A conversation in one place continues elsewhere. A technique learned in one context reappears transformed in another. Knowledge does not travel in straight lines. It loops, resurfaces, and evolves.

When I hand over my passport and wait for the stamp, I know my movement is finite. The rose on my wrist reminds me that some journeys follow a different logic, one shaped by exchange, memory, and imagination, and far less confined by borders. That, too, is a manifestation of boundlessness.

The scent of old wood mixed with rice always carries me back to my grandmother’s side. Sea breeze entwined with grass and tree bark lets me glimpse scenes from childhood. The soft aroma of Pears lotion holds my mother’s gentleness within it. When the fragrance of Rush2 surfaces, the laughter and vitality of my university days awaken again. And the scent of Chance preserves a chapter of the past that is difficult to put into words.

Scent is a portal through time. Once a moment in life is accompanied by a smell, it becomes a label—a trigger—that can effortlessly pull you back to the past. Yet the bond between scent and memory is profoundly intimate: the same fragrance can lead different people to entirely different recollections and emotions. This is the true allure of scent—it must be experienced firsthand. There is no right or wrong, no hierarchy of taste; everyone holds their own interpretation.

I once heard it said that the soul neither resides within the body nor drifts beyond the elements, but exists like an energy field enveloping the human form—intangible yet perceptible, much like scent. I hope that everyone can find here a trace of fragrance that resonates with their own soul.

At the intersection of smell and sight lies my space of creative freedom. Within scent, I allow my thoughts to wander freely, guided by aroma as colors, lines, materials, and craftsmanship converge into singular works. The six senses and the five aggregates are both the source of artistic inspiration and the channels through which perceptions translate into one another. Immersing myself in creation between olfaction and vision is like playing a game I never tire of. And through this, I hope more people may encounter the one scent that truly belongs to them.

If you have ever truly taken the time to smell fragrances that move you, you will notice that they rarely stay obediently within predefined categories. A breeze brimming with greenery, a rose that feels familiar yet indefinable, a blade of grass edged with sharpness… This sense of chaos is the most authentic state of scent. By nature, it resists order, rejects boundaries, and refuses to be contained.

In the hands of perfumers, however, boundaries are endlessly expanded through technique. In the past, the scent of a flower belonged only to the season in which it bloomed. Today, chemistry can retrieve a fading aroma from memory, or conjure an atmosphere that has never existed in nature at all.

Looking at the contemporary Chinese fragrance market, it may well be the most ideal space for this kind of momentum. There is no rigid lineage to be upheld, and consumers’ noses—like their curiosity—are in their most open phase. This sense of “boundlessness” in the environment may be the greatest gift to creators: it does not rush to judge, but chooses first to listen.

Two hundred years ago, people made perfumes from flowers, never imagining that anything beyond what grew from the earth could be captured in a bottle. One hundred years ago, perfumes were sold in crystal flasks, and the general public never dreamed of using them like the ladies of high society. Twenty years ago, perfumes made in China were seen as inferior, cheap, and unoriginal—stylish trendsetters in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou wouldn’t even glance at them.

In 2026, you can buy perfumes crafted purely from compounds or choose ones housed in glass or even metal bottles. You can find works by Italian perfumers in the suburbs of Beijing and spot Chinese-branded boutiques on the streets of Paris. Department store counters offer minimalist single-note scents alongside intricately layered vintage-inspired fragrances. Perfumers in Grasse search across Europe for the next fertile field or promising plant, while Chinese perfumers delve into ancient texts to rediscover classic recipes and more distinctly Chinese aromas.

Absolute freedom breaks all barriers through heart-to-heart connection—we remain open, limitless, seeking neither meaning nor outcome. Sparks fly from friction and collision; souls ignite and converge into inspiration. Boundless now, it all begins.
